cypress hybirds

I've been thinking about this for a while.
I've read that, at least one of the cypress hybrids (leylands), are not fertile. Does that mean that A) the tree generally doesn't make cones or B) that the cones do not contain viable seed?
If it's one, both or a combination of the two, then how come there are a million differrent leyland cypress varities. Is each new one a new cross between alaskan yellow cedar and cuppressus macrocarpa?
I have seen pictures of leyland cones, even variegated ones in the conifer 'encyclopedia'.
And does anyone know if the hybrid X ovensii makes viable cones?
Since there are a few cypress hybirds with a "false" cypress - is it fair to say that most cupressus species could hybridize with one another?
