Color change on pine trunk

I've got a small P. wallichiana that was planted last summer. The trunk has changed from green to red just above the ground level, and wondering if this is normal or if it might be tissue damage from cold. The needles on branches coming off the 3rd whorl turned brown over winter, but balance of tree looks OK. It has put on about 6"-8" of growth and seems to be healthy. The tree is very marginally hardy here, and I really didn't expect it to survive winter. Here's a few pics:
