It will grow between 8 and 12 inches per year, so it's not much of a slow grower.
Maybe you can already buy a bigger specimen at your supplier...

Thank you coniferjoy. Do you mind if I ask a couple more questions? Can this be planted any time of the year? I would dedicate myself to watering if necessary. My google search seems to indicate that a ready source is common in the UK and not so much in the US. Any ideas?

Raro, when plants are growing in a pot, you can plant them the whole year.
But the best time of year to plant them is the end of summer.
For B&B plants fall is the best time for planting because nurseriemen has to cut the roots first for creating new hair roots which will give a much better transplant result.

Juniperus communis 'Hibernica' is originaly from Europe, it was discovered in Ireland.
For this reason it's more common in Europe then in the U.S.
You can also choose for an alternative like Juniperus communis 'Pencil Point' which is a bit more narrow.

the question of when is more attuned to when your SHOULD do it.. rather than IF you can do it ...

let me suggest .. in your z7 ... that august is NOT when ... it just gets too hot during the day.... but more importantly ... it has the potential to stay too hot at night ... no recovery period ....

see link ... and shoot for getting stock in late sept or so.. for your zone.. IMHO ... and perhaps even later ... perhaps someone more local to z7 can speak to more precise timing ....

your odds of success will go down fast.. if you are going to rely on bigboxstore plants bought in august ....

again.. it can be done anytime... i am talking about when it is much more forgiving ...

also ... these have very aggressive roots... if buying potted.. and large... odds are.. they could be very root bound in the pot ... and in opening up the root system.. again... august will not be the best time to do that ...

you might also want to call your county extension office.. and ask if there are any local considerations with juniper diseases .... though the pic you shows.. doenst seem to indicate such ...

its not commonly available because it is a very old plant ... like cars.. most peeps want the newest and best ... but there is nothing wrong with the old standards.. if you can find them ....

though it wont matter in your zone.. i have had snowload issues on this plant.. in case some snow bunnies are lurking a dreaming up ideas ...

and finally .... size does matter when dealing with getting a transplant ESTABLISHED ... a smaller transplant will GET OVER IT... and start growing more vigorously.. than a very large transplant... and perhaps.. could outgrow a larger plant in say 3 to 5 years ... IMHO ... i would shoot for something in the 3 to 4 foot range ... UNLESS you are having this professionally done .. with a supreme warranty .. besides the fact ... that it will physically be easier... unless you have strapping young men around.. and do insist on SINGLE LEADER PLANTS ....
