Pics from my hood - ID one

Some nice pictures of conifers from the mean streets of north central san antonio. The first tree is obvious - I can identify the cypress to the the cultivar but Im not 100% on the juniper. Also, can someone tell me if the cypress cone will be ripe this year?

The cypress cone will be ripe in a matter of weeks, but will need heat to open it.

Thanks - Does anyone have a procedure for this - I'm guessing on a baking sheet in the oven?

Here's one more to ID - I think picea pungens but Im spruce ignorant. Its been there for at least a few years but near death I think.

the question of when is more attuned to when your SHOULD do it.. rather than IF you can do it ... let me suggest .. in your z7 ... that august is NOT when ... it just gets too hot during the day.... but more importantly ... it has the potential to stay too hot at night ... no recovery period .... see link ... and shoot for getting stock in late sept or so.. for your zone.. IMHO ... and perhaps even later ... perhaps someone more local to z7 can speak to more precise timing .... your odds of success will go down fast.. if you are going to rely on bigboxstore plants bought in august .... again.. it can be done anytime... i am talking about when it is much more forgiving ... also ... these have very aggressive roots... if buying potted.. and large... odds are.. they could be very root bound in the pot ... and in opening up the root system.. again... august will not be the best time to do that ... you might also want to call your county extension office.. and ask if there are any local considerations with juniper diseases .... though the pic you shows.. doenst seem to indicate such ... its not commonly available because it is a very old plant ... like cars.. most peeps want the newest and best ... but there is nothing wrong with the old standards.. if you can find them .... though it wont matter in your zone.. i have had snowload issues on this plant.. in case some snow bunnies are lurking a dreaming up ideas ... and finally .... size does matter when dealing with getting a transplant ESTABLISHED ... a smaller transplant will GET OVER IT... and start growing more vigorously.. than a very large transplant... and perhaps.. could outgrow a larger plant in say 3 to 5 years ... IMHO ... i would shoot for something in the 3 to 4 foot range ... UNLESS you are having this professionally done .. with a supreme warranty .. besides the fact ... that it will physically be easier... unless you have strapping young men around.. and do insist on SINGLE LEADER PLANTS .... ken Here is a link that might be useful: link

Thanks much guys! -LL, that is a blue(ish) "Glory of the Snow", Chionodoxa forbesii. I looked it up and it is hardy in zone 4, maybe 3. They would look fantastic in your fairy garden area!! How are your daffs doing? -Hey Spogarden! I think I am good on both of those, but thanks so much for asking! You may already know this, but the big Plant Expo at the Spokane Community College is on the 14th. Didn't know I had QUITE so many primroses until I started taking all of these pics! Got some of the double ones on a sale rack for a buck each a few years ago. Then when the stores put the no longer blooming plants on the sale rack I tend to snap up a few! Thanks for looking ;-) CMK

Thank you sshanky - not I'm not a photographer, just an amateur who enjoys the hobby. I have a few photos on the Hortiplex Database on the 'See My Journal' link and other links to my albums on 'My Page'. I used my Olympus C750UZ camera for that photo. We're lucky with hibiscus here and have 7 foot high hedges of it surrounding our garden. The golden flowered one in the photo is one of two I planted near our back patio as I love the bright sunny colour. Your leaf fall is probably the result of the move, as you say. It should start to pick up strength with the approaching spring weather. Sharon

Hi Laura, sorry I missed your post, you posted just 1 minute before I made my post haha! The beaches in bermuda were definitely the nicest I have ever seen. There were plenty of large rocks around the beaches, but the sand itself was really soft and fine. The beaches around my area dont compare at all! Definitely one of my favorite vacations even though I was only there for 5 days. My plumerias are doing really well. The cuttings you sent me are growing really well, the Scott Pratt is doing especially well, it put out a ton of growth this summer. The California sunset is doing well too, but I think I will give it more sun so it grows a little faster! My largest plumeria is approaching 13 feet tall (pot included) and is now the tallest tropical plant in my yard (even larger than the Adondila I bought!)so it's going to be a real challenge finding a place for that one inside. It has 3 inflos on it now but I can only take pictures of the blooms from my upstairs window! It's about a week or 2 away from blooming. Looks like it's going to have to get cut back next spring as much as I hate having to do that to my plumerias! I havent posted too many pics of my plumerias this year because they all bloomed so well last year that this year there have been barely any blooms at all. My plumeria Divine put out 2 flowers from the inflo that it made indoors and it is just now starting to make another inflo. My Pretty Princess has always been a late one to bloom and it's inflo is still a good month away from blooming. I hope it blooms before it's too late! Hopefully it will be a warm fall and nmaybe next summer the plumerias will all have enough growth to bloom like crazy again. I hope your plumerias and tropicals are all doing well! -Alex

I'm pretty much cypress-ignorant but if not for the Texas locale, I would have thought the first photo was a very good looking hemlock. So what type of cypress is this?

The first picture is cedrus deodara. The cypress are the narrow golden plants, specifically cupressus sempervirens. Probably 'swanes golden', the only golden variety to my knowledge.The last one is a juniper Im not sure about, I'm thinking juniperus flaccida. None of these are mine mind you so I'm guessing.

Hi Tcharles,

The cypress cones look like first-year immature cones to me, I'd give them until winter 2008/09. When they're ripe, they'll open on drying out just on a sunny windowsill, they don't need baking or anything like that.

Not sure what the juniper is, but I don't think it's J. flaccida.

Yep, a struggling Blue Spruce for that last one. Looks too shaded, as much as anything, tho' maybe it's the shade that's allowed it to live by not overheating.

Nice tcharles. Good-looking conifers.

Heck if you can grow Deodar Cedar, you're good to go!

I guessed that maybe the Juniper was Juniperus rigida 'Pendula'.

deodar cedar grows great here. It just grows too big for most places. There are a bunch of huge ones in old neighborhoods close to downtown.

I don't think that juniper is rigida because it doesn't have any prickly needles. If not flaccida then maybe recurva var coxi. There are weeping cultivars of virginiana and scolporum, but this is planted by the side of a freeway and I don't think TXDOT would have put something like that there. But who knows. I have more closeups. Maybe I'll start another thread and see if someone can figure it out.
