Comments (2)searched the whole web.. eh??? after ten years.. my GG is 20 feet tall ... from a 4 incher planted ... after ten years.. my smargard.. emerald green ... is 6 feet tall from a 4 footer planted ... try googling green giant for it latin name ... and then add: annual growth rate... and then google for emerald green latin.. and add the same.. and you should find.. one grows 2 to 5 feet per year.. and the other 6 inches or so ..... depending on your climate.. you better have a pretty big yard for GG's ... and on either.. Comments (15)I heard not to plant a green giant in a place where it's slope (don't like too moist, though soil has been fixed, and plant high, etc... b/c reportedly quite drought tolerant once established... is that more BS... It was on a place where it was catching water, and temporarily moved into pot, needs to be very temp... Also heard they fair miserably in compacted clay, another myth??? Plant high, find flare (That was fun, it was buried so so deep, extend whole wide, DONT ammend)... OBviously, the clay around roots needs loosened, mulched so feeders can grow out (the root prunings been done, the crap nursery soil washed off)... but i want some bigger feeders before ground gets too cold........... Do they care about acidic (more) or alkaline? more?? some say they are resistant to phyphorta (will I ever spell that right)?? the westerns only... we'll see... they do get deep tap, correct?? Comments (4)I think many conifers grow very slowly. Pine trees are the exception. They grow very fast. You may consider those, but they are wayyyyyy more than 20ft. Another fast growing conifer is the Witchita Blue Juniper. It will get 4-8 ft wide and 15-20 ft tall. If you plant them, make sure to plant 4 feet next to each other. It can be used as a screen or a windbreak and will need no pruning. It also has appealing color. Goodluck with what ever you choose....See Morelcgun4

Spacing should be 6' in my opinon. Here's some photos (of remember) trees that grow a minimum of 3 feet per year in the US when established. Basically in 5-7 years with trees being planted at a heigth of 1 foot or thereabouts, you'll have a tree(s) that becomes easily 15 feet tall x easily 5-6 feet wide (hence the nurseryies 6' recommendation)... and you have to remember that's just 5-7 years of this trees lifespan; "which ain't 'Jack'" if you think about it. 6' is perfect, believe me. 5' is too close.

As to the fence, I'd go farther than 3 feet - the more the better. This is going to be a huge - huge specimen in as early as 20 years, therefore space them as comfortably as you can 'in your own space' without encroaching on your own property, i.e.' If I (myself) had the room, I'd go eight feet - but guage your own circumstance and do what you can.
