My azaleas in front yard.

Randy, from the street facing the maples, you see the dark red dwarf maple, the dark green of those hollies and then that muted brownish red of the large maple. Beyond it, there is a row of pink azaleas that are just starting to bloom. The colors, altogether are very striking. Whoever designed that knew their plants. I'm glad you like the maples; I really think they're beautiful. Joe, I hope you'll post some of your spectacular photography; I'd love to see those cherry and magnolias and the rest of spring as it wakes in your world. Thanks for posting. Thank you, Meghan; I see a drift of bird feathers occasionally and know that the feline stalkers have been around. We keep our kitty inside, but I know there are loose cats. grrr. I don't think you can have too many birdhouses! Thank you, Krista. I like columbines too. I just discovered them last year and have a couple of whites plus this salmon colored one. They have been reseeding and spreading. Yay! What color are yours? Hamp, I'm glad to hear you have seen a hummingbird. Supposedly they've made it to this area, but I haven't seen any. I love those things. Thank you for your kind words. Don didn't make the birdhouses, but he has made a couple of bluebird houses. He's bummed they will sit on the the manufactured housing, lol, rather than the houses he made for them. Happy spring, everyone! Gean

Thank you everyone. Floridarose, Jean Bach isn't that big of a monster. Maybe 6x6. Jerome, Yes I think Anne Boleyn is a perfect mound. Wish all my roses had the growth habit she has! NY Steve, My main tip is to dig a big hole, ammend the soil in it, and plant the rose there. My dirt is horrible, so I take out all the dirt when I plant my roses and replace the dirt with compost from our local wastewater plant. I've gotten lazy the last few years, and thought my garden soil had been improved enough to skip this step, and the roses I've planted since then have not grown into beauties. Most of the roses shown here are from my garden planted around 2008. I do fertilize (on occasion-haven't this year), I don't spray, and in last summer's drought I didn't even water because my drip tube irrigation system was eaten up by animals looking for water, and besides, what little well water I had was needed for the plants dying in the drought, and the roses were not dying.

Well, those daffs and tulips are new this fall but I always have plans. The by the trellis garden had daylilies last year which I moved out so I could do the spring bulbs. I plan to put zinnias up there for the summer. But I see I have the bulbs planted so thickly that I might have to wait for the folliage to start to die down. Not to worry, I will figgure it out. I Have to start the zinnia seeds myself anyway and since I have no greenhouse or growlights, I have to wait until its warm to start my seeds outside. Then the other side, I only had those belgium block terraces put in late last summer. Before that I did not have the daffs there. I had zinnias planted on what was a slope. I intend to plant zinnias in there were the daffs are after they fade. It would be about the same general area I had zinnias before and it should look smashing. The tulips between the daylilies are new too but the daylilies will take over later. Then the daffs by the walkway have roses behind them which take over for summer bloom.

This is one of my roses in the front yard. Just starting full bloom. My front yard. You get a great view of the short stone wall that I had put in earlier this spring. Before that the hill just sloped all the way down to the sidewalk. The grassey section used to be the lawn that went down to the street. Now I started a garden next to the wall there by planting a row of four o'clocks. Can't do more this year as I have done enough but that grass will be replaced with a daylily garden next spring. Porch garden section that I showed above but this time starting to bloom. A small section of my side yard rose garden. The Clamatis Tower again. This time all purple. A section of my front yard were you can see a little of the tower. Plus you can see the blackberries in bloom and the honeysuckle too. There are daylilies all around this area.

Very pretty. The woods behind form a great background for your garden. Do formosa azaleas grow in your area?

Anniegolden: I have seen the Formosa Azaleas in Nurserys around here, but to my knowledge I don't have any. I have a lot of Coral Bells (coral pink with a bloom within a bloom) with small leaves They look solid pink when they bloom. I have some Pink Ruffles with the bigger flowers and leaves. Gerard L Tabor is one of my favorite ones. My white ones are prob. Delaware White and Snow. I planted most of them 30 or more years ago. I lost a few last summer due to drought.

Jean, I went out this morning and looked for a tag on that clematis. I bought about 3 at the end of the season a few years ago. Then a dog or varmint ran thru my trelice and pulled everthing including the three clematises out into the yard. When I got them put back I think I only had two that lived. Believe you me, I got some stakes and staked that trelice in the ground.
The tag I can barely remember was a French sounding name. I think it was "Ville de Lyon" It is the right color, but mine has more white coming out from center. The tag I found today says Clematis viticella Polish Spirit which the tag describes as Deep Purple (blooms June - Sept.) I think it is closer in color to Ville de Lyon. Checkout Brushwoods Nursery on the Web. A nursery lady told me they are a great source. Sarah Ann
