Gorgeous !! Ranae is new to me, very pretty. My maggie is just a baby, willl take a long time befor it gets anywhere close to yours. Enjoyed seeing your pics.

2012 Spring Flowering Trees and Shrubs

Most of the fruit trees are blooming. There are pinks, red, and white blossoms, and with the early flowering shrubs, it is just beautiful. There are still a few more shrubs that haven't started to bloom yet. The white blooms on the two Red Plum trees are filled with thousands of honeybees. It is wonderful to hear the sound of them humming and buzzing about in the branches overhead. There are so many of them that they are bumping in to one another and knocking off blooms. The ground is white with Plum flowers. Looks like snow! The cherries haven't started blooming yet, but the wild Sand Plums are in full bloom everywhere throughout the countryside. I hope we get lots of those wild plums this summer. They make the best, tart Jam. I especially love it on fresh baked bread with butter. Yum. The Redbud trees are just beginning to bloom and there are new leaves popping out on all the hardwood trees. But, it's 81 degrees out today. I have to get a hand on the weeding before it goes to seed. There is much to do in cutting back dead wood caused by last year's drought. Lots to do to clean up the garden. Had to come in and cool off for a bit. (puff, puff). It's going to take a week or more to get all the weeding done. The purple flowering Henbit is so pretty. Every flower has a busy little bee sipping nectar - I hate to pull it out, but it has really gone bonkers this year. It has to be hoed or pulled out - at least around my flowers. I will start the mowing and trimming later today. Gads! I am so out of shape for all this gardening! Going to take a while to get my back and legs back into it.

Anniegolden: I have seen the Formosa Azaleas in Nurserys around here, but to my knowledge I don't have any. I have a lot of Coral Bells (coral pink with a bloom within a bloom) with small leaves They look solid pink when they bloom. I have some Pink Ruffles with the bigger flowers and leaves. Gerard L Tabor is one of my favorite ones. My white ones are prob. Delaware White and Snow. I planted most of them 30 or more years ago. I lost a few last summer due to drought. Jean, I went out this morning and looked for a tag on that clematis. I bought about 3 at the end of the season a few years ago. Then a dog or varmint ran thru my trelice and pulled everthing including the three clematises out into the yard. When I got them put back I think I only had two that lived. Believe you me, I got some stakes and staked that trelice in the ground. The tag I can barely remember was a French sounding name. I think it was "Ville de Lyon" It is the right color, but mine has more white coming out from center. The tag I found today says Clematis viticella Polish Spirit which the tag describes as Deep Purple (blooms June - Sept.) I think it is closer in color to Ville de Lyon. Thanks everyone! Looking back at the pictures gives me hope for next year. No accidents yet, but close a couple times. Also one ticket for running a stop sign....does that count? :-) I have so much work ahead this spring. The DL bed has been in place since 2005 and badly needs dividing. Just not sure what I will do with all the "extra" plants. Not many of my friends are into gardening. Guess I can always put a free sign and put them on the boulevard. Have done that before. luckygal, the bridal wreath has really done well for me. Only problem is it wants to get bigger than I want it to. So I prune it back several times each year, but later in the summer I have to let it go if I want blooms in the spring! Jacqui, don't prune in fall. You are cutting off the spring blooms when you do that. I always prune it back after it finishes blooming and then again about mid-summer. Annette, glad my pictures brightened your day. I was actually surprised when I looked back through my pictures. I didn't remember the spring having that much color in my yard! cyn, calamity and roseberri, thank you! Martha, more time than I like sometimes. But like a child, once you have them you must continue to lavish love and attention on them. CMK, as said above, sometimes I almost resent the time required. But then when everything is blooming I am again revitalized. (even to plant more....!)but no more new beds. We gave the rototiller to our son! plantmaven, how can you say that? Your gardens are lovely! We have had drought as well, but nothing like you have had recently. Just lugging the hoses around can be quite a challenge! It can be so disheartening, to see gardens you have worked so hard and spent considerable $$ on, then wither and die in drought.

Thanks everyone. Mantis, I really appreciate your posting the image of But Wait There's More, as I'd worried the picture was mis-labeled. But my pic looks like what you posted instead of the registration image. Good to know it sometimes doubles. I actually like the later bloom picture better than the registration picture. Best wishes, Julie PS The glass at the Consservatory was created by Dale Chihuly ( Che-hoo -ly is the closet way to say it phonetically.) One little dish of his on display was selling for something like $7800 a couple of years ago, so these huge glass sculptures have to be PRICELESS!

Your garden statues are wonderful. You must have literally thousands of rose blooms. I can't wait for my garden to be more mature like yours, although I don't know whether my roses will ever reach that size. Wonderful!

Wow, your rose garden is one of the most impressive and beautiful I have ever seen. I'm new here, I live in Westchester New York, originally from Los Gatos California. How old are most of your roses, do you spray or fertilize those giant roses a lot? My rose garden is growing last, I have about 60 own root roses now...but it's a young garden, only about 3 and a half years old. Hope my garden looks a little like yours someday. I enjoy the teas, hybrid perpetuals, and bourbons the most. If you have any tips, I would enjoy hearing them. I am so addicted to rose gardening now, it's crazy. Haha!

Jerome, Yes I think Anne Boleyn is a perfect mound. Wish all my roses had the growth habit she has!
NY Steve, My main tip is to dig a big hole, ammend the soil in it, and plant the rose there. My dirt is horrible, so I take out all the dirt when I plant my roses and replace the dirt with compost from our local wastewater plant. I've gotten lazy the last few years, and thought my garden soil had been improved enough to skip this step, and the roses I've planted since then have not grown into beauties. Most of the roses shown here are from my garden planted around 2008. I do fertilize (on occasion-haven't this year), I don't spray, and in last summer's drought I didn't even water because my drip tube irrigation system was eaten up by animals looking for water, and besides, what little well water I had was needed for the plants dying in the drought, and the roses were not dying.

Thanks for the very nice response and tips. I have about 14 Teas on there way from Vintage Roses and Roses Unlimited. I'll be sure to dig nice big holes, as I have always tried to do...which is hard where I am at, because of all the rocks and tree roots. I get the pick out and work away though. I have some good cow manure compost, well aged and bagged, plus some other high end compost I plan to use. I have three different drip systems in place, because I was finding it took too long to water my 60 roses, once or twice a week...specially with a 7 year old daughter who always wants to play barbies or bike with daddy...I'm trying to get her hooked on roses, as my parents got me hooked on gardening too. Have a great Spring, thanks for your kindness and for sharing your very nice pictures!

Just super pics. From a rose lover with a young garden I'm green with envy. Maybe in a decade or so mine will be half as gorgeous.
