is that potting media appropriate?? .. looks a bit peaty for me .... and if you told me before what kind you use.. i cant keep track ...

Thanks for the info, I actually haven't tied it to the stake next to it at all, and you're right! it is a peat based potting soil, I'm new to growing trees, should I re-pot it in a different kind of soil? What would you suggest?

One more question, as seen in my first photos there are two branches that could be made into the leader. The first is longer and thicker but the second one bends back into a straight up position a little easier. Which one should I tie up?

second pic ... lattice behind... about half way up the lattice.. on OLD WOOD ... not fresh growth .... tie it securely to the stake ...

do NOT cut off multiple leaders at this time ...

every needle is a food making machine ... at this point in life ... it needs them all ...

maybe next fall ... pic one ...

peat retains too much water ... conifers like a drink and then near full drainage...

the difference between wet peat and dry peat based media can be double or triple the weight of the pot ..

in trees.. wet vs dry might be 1/4 ... because a vast majority drains right thru ...

the best example of pre made mix.. would be to use a cactus mix ... there should be many posts about potting media ....

when you got it.. was it bare root or what.. i dont know if i would repot this time of year.. will defer to others ...

with the media right to the top of the rim.. how do you apply water ????

When I got it it was in a small plastic pot with a block of soil on the roots. I guess I didn't realize that I wasn't suppose to fill the pot all the way to the top, as for watering, it's been raining alot in the Seattle area the past few weeks so I've just been leaving it out in the rain until the soil is saturated and then I put it undercover. I'm learning alot from this forum, this kind of started out as an experiment and now its turning into an actually hobby!
