Now This is Disgusting.

I got 4 potted daylilies planted yesterday,and two the day before.Now,It just ain't easy for me to dig and plant with my body hurting constantly daily,and I really felt proud of myself last night,Today, I go outside after the paper,and look at my flower bed,and all 6 of them daylilies had been dug up,and the daylilies laying by the hole.One had the roots tore up bad, but,I got them all replanted and I think the one with torn up roots will make it and grow..All my name tags was still there, except for that one,and I had to hunt for it,and found it and put it back,after I replanted it.That is downright disgusting.Now, I quit putting bone meal and bloodmeal in my planting holes last year after that happened,so I know thats not why they were dug up again.I figure it was either a Racoon or a Possum dug them up.I heard a dog outside barking and barking for about a half hour, maybe it was barking at what ever was out there.Well,I don't know if it will work or not, but after I got them all replanted,I sprayed them again to keep deer from coming and eating them, and then,I sprinkled a lot of Red Pepper all around them.Maybe that will give them sneezing fits.I HOPE IT RUNS THEM AWAY.

OOH. I'm so sorry that happened.. that is Massively frustrating..

HEre in NY, I"m always fuming about the squirrels that LITERALLY eat the tops off my flowers and love to dig around and uproot new plants.

I'm not origninally from here and sometimes, I'm like OMGosh!!!!! What is WRONG with these FREAKING squirrels in NY.. there's so little plant life they went beserk and have to eat flowers?? It's Not NORMAL!!!!

I am so sorry Jean! I lost one of my new daylilies, roots and all to some varmint, but I have never lost a new planting. I hope your "treatment measures" work.

On another subject, Jen send me an email. I'm having trouble finding your address in my address book in this new computer. I wanted to respond to your question about natural means for pain control in an email.

No answers here, but a recognition of how very interesting (and provocative) this post is. A recent discussion on pear ripening brought home how varied people's experiences can be, and it's clear that "Where" matters a lot. Appears the same is true of apples, another pome . I speculated during the pear discussion that some varieties came to prominence in certain areas just because they got the right chilling sequence on the tree. That is, you picked 'em, ate em, and loved 'em. No uncertainty. You could certainly infer that as needs and tools changed from the Revolutionary period, when fruit was stored through as much of the winter as possible, to the Industrial age, when it became possible to ship via rail -on ice, no less!- that the commercial need for fruit that tasted "just so" right off the tree developed. So apples that were well loved 150-250 years ago would be worthless as a commercial venture for quite a period, perhaps the better part of a century so far. We ended up with quasi-apples that look good in an ad, or which handle and keep well and look great, but aren't all that good. Make a market for those apples that store well, taste great, and even look purty (are there any?) and you could save all that gene pool, ay? You'd have to overcome some stereotypes, no doubt. But we have a public which has learned that there is more to wine than red and white, which turns its back on "french bread", insisting on "pain au levain", and wants its cheeses properly aged and sausages that are more than salt and fat and smoke. I really think it may start to insist on superior fruit as well. I do hope. Best, M

I agree that you should call the police if he's exposing himself publicly though I'd be willing to bet he doesn't realize what he's doing. I know I've been guilty of standing in front of windows naked without realizing it if I get distracted by the phone ringing when I'm getting dressed or something. I sure hope no one took a picture, lol. I'm probably alone here, and it's just my opinion, but what I don't really get though is the public bashing. It's one thing to be annoyed but you've called them low life, fat, disgusting, stupid, ugly, awful, bad dressing, "enhancement" needing, jerk, a-holes, hairy, couldn't pass the Bar, gold digging skanks and then posted a picture on a public forum. That seems like a lot of superficial name-calling and I think the picture is way over the top. I wouldn't like to see my neighbors naked either but it seems low to make fun of how they look on a message board, especially if you don't know if they are doing it on purpose or not or if there's some underlying mental illness or other factors you don't know about. I guess I don't understand the purpose of it other than a venting measure? You don't seem to have any real proof that he is purposely trying to expose himself to children so I don't get why you would insult them in such a visual way other than you just don't like them. I mean, yeah she probably shouldn't be running around in her underwear but maybe there was a reason for it. It just seems weird to me that you would post a picture of it on a public forum. I'm probably going to get flamed for this but I can take it, lol. I do sincerely hope you find relief though. If it's making you uncomfortable then it's not ok. I'd personally try the anonymous note in case he doesn't realize how visible he is.

You can't change anyone's behavior except your own. So wishing that the joint gifts would stop or that they will stop chastising you if you don't chip in isn't going to get you anywhere. You can either continue to contribute to group gifts in order to keep the peace and get over your feelings about it, OR you can quit contributing and just deal with (ignore if possible) the scolding from MIL. IDEA: What if you just chip in a nominal amount to their gift $5 or $10, quit giving $60 because you know it won't be matched. Then you can always buy a separate gift for the recipient, spending what you consider to be an appropriate amount. As for the birthday gifts, who ever said that you HAVE to buy someone a gift, and that it has to be something on their $100 list? Buy IF and WHAT you want and leave it at that. You're letting them bully you into buying them expensive gifts. They probably will still bully you but whether you let them is up to you. You're worried about not ruining the relationship and I can really sympathize with that. But what I've learned is that your in-laws are going to behave the way they want to no matter what. In my first marriage, no matter what I did, no matter how hard I tried, MIL just didn't like me. And believe me, I tried! What a wasted effort. Second marriage, I'm just myself and nothing more, and unfortunaely inlaws & I have had a couple of unavoidable run-ins due to circumstances beyond our control. However, they still love me and treat me with respect (and vice versa). Bottom line, you need to live your own life, do what's best for you (just as they are apparently doing!!) and quit acquiescing to their expectations. It's fine to give in on some things, especially the things that are not important to you, but things that go against your grain like this apparently does, stand your ground and do what works for you.

I know the feeling-I have a running battle with the squirrels in my yard whenever I move plant or add new ones. Loose soil is an invitation for them. I'v even gone to plant flowers that I had started in pots and found peanuts or walnuts buried in the pot-and I know it wasn't there when I started! I recently had someone tell me that rubber snakes will skare them off-at least its something cheap to try this year-even if my husband is giving me odd looks. I also just picked up a fake owl for the furthest bed from the house-I really don't want to scare my birds away!

This would be infuriating even for a healthy person, but for it to happen to someone like you who has to put up with all your pain IS disgusting! I have used the cayenne pepper/red pepper method before too and I think it worked.

Sorry you have to deal with this on top of everything else.

My sympathies--nature loves the banquet I plant each year, so I can relate. Deer, squirrels, racoons, rabbits, voles, copperheads, mosquitos, deer ticks--you name, I fight it every year. Deer are the worst right now and each ingoing plant has to be doused with Deer Off--disgusting spray that includes rotten eggs, blood and cayenne.

In addition to your cayenne, you might try mixing a bottle of castor oil with a small bag of vermiculite (between 10 and 20 parts of vermiculite to 1 part castor oil) and mix a tablespoonful of that into your soil with each new plant--it does keep the racoons off and also repels voles.

Dogs can do this. I have a lab retriever 3 year old and have an awful time with her digging up everything I plant. I think she can smell my hands on it and up it comes. Often the dirt is completely shaken off the roots but they aren't harmed. The plant is just laying there beside the hole. I don't know how she can do this. I have given up planting anything new in my back yard where she spends most of the time unless I have the time to really watch her. Maybe I should try something that would change the scent when I plant.

Oh Jean, how frustrating and unfair. Bad enough you have to plant them once, haveing to replant is just beyond thinking about.

So its Friday, are the ones replanted ok now? No more digging by nasty critters?

Rital Yes, they are fine now.Haven't had no more digging,YET.Maybe they were tooo busy eating bread I threw out.I picked up a new loaf of bread at the store yesterday when I went out with a daughter,and when I got back,I had a Old loaf that had been sitting about 2 weeks and I had not eat but a couple slices out of it,and it got stale, so I threw it all out in the back yard, thinking the birds will eat on it for several days.I was shocked the next day when I looked out to see if the birds was eating on it,as there was nothing left.I know Birds didn't eat that whole loaf of bread, so I guess whatever dug up my daylilies spent the night eating that bread.I think if I had known the birds wouldn't be getting it,I would have filled the bread full of red pepper, too and maybe give them a bad case of indigestion. DARN CRITTERS.

Well, at least the replanted daylilies are ok.

I have all sorts of critters here too overnight, mostly racoons and possums. They eat any bread I throw out overnight or anything leftover from dinner. No use putting it in the garbage cans as they just get opened. At least they don't usually dig up the plants here!

FYI-so far the beds I put rubber snakes in are being virtually left alone. The ones without snakes.....well that's another story-need to find more snakes!

Wow,I DON"T want no rubber snakes in my yard,or anything that even resembles a snake,as I am terrified of snakes of any kind or size.I have had tooo many close calls on snakes.I bought a garden hose a few years ago and it was different from the ones I usually buy.I hooked it up outside and used it a little while, but,every time I walked on the side of the house and seen that hose in the grass,I thought it was a snake every time,and it scared me to no end.Took awhile for the heart to stop pounding,I can tell you.After a couple weeks of that,I went back and bought a bright yellow hose to match the others I had,and I gave that hose away.On second thought,my daughter needed a hose,so I gave it to her,and it don't scare her.

I've had the same problem but have never heard of placing rubber snakes to keep animals from digging. I'm going to try that one.
