Botanist Charles Parry (1823-1890) is credited with discovering several plants, including Picea Engelmannii.

He also named several mountains near Denver.

Engelmann Peak (13,362 ft; 4073m) [south of Berthoud Falls] named after George Engelmann, another botanist

Parry Peak (13,391ft; 4082m) [nouth of Berthoud Pass]

Parry also named nearby Mt. Eva after his wife Eva

Fraser River Valley [north of Berthoud Pass] note trees infected by mountain pine beetle

Fraser Experimental Forest

It looks like the FEF has cleared many infected trees

Young P. contorta, with lady bug and cone

Very susceptible to wildfires

Broom on P. engelmannii

Not sure if this would be good grafting material? It looks like prior years needles are gone.

St. Louis creek, high water

Hoops Creek [south of Berthoud Pass]

A. bifolia, P. engelmannii

This conifer is oddly resistant to the mountain pine beetle ;)

Abies bifolia (bark)

A. bifolia (male cones)

A. bifolia (bud)

A. bifolia (female cones)

A. bifolia seedling

Shallow roots

The next few I think are A. bifolia, but am not sure. The habits seemed to vary widely.
