Grape magic -- or another nice bluey-purple?

I tacked on my question to an old thread about purple daylilies, but I decided to start my own.

I am in Georgia. I have a sunny East-facing slope that is getting too hard to mow! I am in the process of removing the grass and making a landscape that will hopefully be pretty!

I am planning to put knock out roses at the top corners of the slope. I want to do two big triangular areas of purple daylilies coming down from the top. Probably two spaces about 3 feet wide at the top, going down about 6 feet -- and about 6 feet wide at the bottom. In short, two good-sized spaces.

I am thinking about Grape Magic. It is really nice looking in photos. I love the purple color and the yellow center. It is also affordable. (A big consideration since I'm filling a big space.)

Have any of you grown this daylily? Does it produce a lot of flowers? Will it be good for holding dirt on my slope? Is it as good-looking as it seems?

I have Stellas elsewhere in my yard -- I thought the yellow centers of grape magic would be nice with them.

I also saw Purple d'oro -- but read in many places that they are not a very nice purple.

Any thoughts for a new daylily grower?

I don't have Grape Magic, but I've heard it is a good one. I have had Purple d'oro & wasn't impressed. I really love the looks of Indian Giver, a darker purple with slight white edge that really catches the eye. I think that one mixed in with a white one like Gentle Shepherd would be very pretty.
I also have Baby Darling which might be nice planting with Grape Magic to extend the season of color.
I don't have a steep slope so don't have much to tell you there. You should do a search on this forum for newyorkrita, she had some threads last fall of her garden. She has built some walls to hold the soil in & has some lovely structures. I was wishing I had steeper slopes to incorporate those :) Lotsa work though!

You're welcome, bromfriends! I'm glad you all enjoyed. Thanks for the kind comments and slobbering. Also, thanks to Lisa and J+A for the heads up on the supposed Vr. Pahoa Beauty being more likely King David Kalamahoosywhatsit. I'm not sure where Bruce got his from...or who imported it with the wrong name. He was assured it was the real Macoy. So back to the unknown drawing board - again! (grumble, grumble) And Gonz - you stop kicking that Till rauhii of yours, and behave yourself! So who wants to come with me on our next brom crawl to Greenstock? I charge $100 per hour as tour guide...ha! Sorry Bruce - just joshin'. K :)

I bought some garlic from WGG last year, they have very reasonable prices and good quality. I have been waiting impatiently for a few months to see when they will start taking orders for this year! dcarch: I would suggest using an Asiatic variety such as Korean Mountain or Asian Tempest for making black garlic. The Asiatic varieties are generally short storing which is probably why the black garlic curing/aging process was invented in the first place. A Turban variety might make a good substitute if you can't find any Asiatics.

Ok, here's where I'm at. The Wasabi--not going to paint with it in this room. So, I'm torn between a cream (Affinity yling yling) and the Weimaramer. I was playing with the BM tool early this am before work on my home computer, I will upload some more ideas later. Anybody have the yling yling? hey it rhymes with Yuengling so maybe that's a sign. Would the Weimeramer, (can we call it "W" for short?) be too dark coming from the Baltic Gray foyer? Busybee--if you have any photos of W in real life, can you post it for me to see? While we are at it, any opinions on nightstand color? If I have a black bed, must the side tables be black/dark wood? Would white look too disjointed? Alrighty, thanks for the help and all the feedback. Back to work. Can't wait to get home tonight to play with that software some more and watch Ralph Lauren on Oprah. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, I'm considering the Wasabi in the attached bathroom. If I can get it to work and look like it has a reason to be in there.

Sorry - but this is just my opinion. IMHO, you will get a much longer bloom season by using two or three different purples with different bloom season. And if you want this area to really show up, try planting groups of maybe three purples and three yellows, three purples, three yellows - or groups of fives. Always use uneven numbers. For mass landscaping and curb appeal from a distance, this is how to get a great effect. We used mass plantings like this for the front of our club bed ( the part that we knew would be seen from the highway.) The colors we chose were reds and yellows. We planted groups of five plants each- some we used were ( yellow and gold) CONDILLA, SMUGGLER'S GOLD ( RED) ROSE CORSAGE, a red Munson - the name just left me, and a few others. Traffic STOPS during bloom season. This is across about a 250' front border.
