The scape bloomed today!

Remember here a while back I was asking if I should cut back an early scape on fall-planted Wonder Of It All? Y'all said let it bloom so I did and here it is!

Rita, That's just it. This is a 2 fan plant that I put in this past spring. It is NOT established well yet. It bloomed in M season and the same scape is putting up a rebloom already. I've never seen rebloom here even on Stella due to the very dry conditions but do have supplemental water this year. I am truly amazed. This one just wants to bloom its head off! Of course it is so cool now that it will have a hard time opening unless I just bring the scape indoors. This one had a hard time opening when our summer nights got into the 50s.

Gorgeous, Celeste! I knew you would have lilacs blooming. They cannot endure our heat, but I would love to smell them....Tell yo what; I will send you gardenias to smell and you send me a lilac bloom ...I am able to have a few peonies, but not the gorgeous lush ones like you have. The rhododendrons are beautiful too. Love the Delphiniums (believe it or not, I have gotten one to bloom here by putting a flowerpot hat over it to shield it from the sun, so I love those. and the Japanese Primroses are really pretty regular ones won't bloom here, so I wouldn't expect those to either. Your garden is always so lovely when it begins. I look forward to your roses. I would love to walk though all of that beauty and just take it in. kay

Laura - My Last Snowflake has never really bounced back from the bad winters. I still only have two fans, despite planting it in a sheltered place. It does have 8-9 buds per scape this year, after last year scaping on only one fan with three buds. Kate - That's too bad that Unshakable Kingdom can't take the heat. I suspected there might be a problem with Angels Bow Down. I got Faith That Can Move Mountains from Karol at the same time, and that one seems to take the heat pretty well. Nancy 6B, Brad and others who haven't had good luck with Westbourne Good Old Days - I wish it grew for you like it does for me. It's so vigorous here that I've sold divisions eight or nine times, plus traded with it several times. I must have it planted in a spot it loves. Mantis - August Groom is another one that grows like gangbusters for me. The foliage looks so bad in my photo because I chopped it back. It has such thick, tall foliage here that it shades daylilies in back of it, and they won't scape unless the groom gets a haircut. Debra

Thanks all, I think it's going to be a pretty amazing daylily. The color is so clear it makes everything else in the yard look dingy. It feels weird having a daylily bloom along with the early iris.

Ok, here's Lush Smush (Burseen 2004), which has been blooming for a week. Newly-planted daylilies from Marietta are at lower right.

Lovely pics! My daylilies are just coming up here in zone 5. Some are barely breaking the soil, while others are anywhere between 1" and 4" -- sigh.

Thanks, for posting the picture of "Wonder of it All". I just ordered it from Maryott's Gardens, I had a hard time choosing between it and Seabiscut. I think I made the right choice. Barbra

You are brave to let it bloom. Our forum friend Ed recommends removing the scapes on new plants, to give time to let the roots develop. So far, so good. Have been brave enough to lop them off. They were pretty short. I know how tough it is to remove those scapes.
