Adding Clothes Washer Water to Cistern

We have a cistern into which all the roof run-off empties, thanks to my husband's re-routing of all the spouting. What I'm wondering is this: I'd like to empty the clothes washer water into the same cistern. Can I do so without creating problems with bacteria build-up, and/or is there anything I can safely put into the cistern to "purify" the water and still be able to use it for the garden?

Don't mix rainwater and "grey water" from household sources. And remember to COVER the cistern so it doesn't turn into a mosquito nursery.

Collect the washer water in a separate container and use it promptly (flowers and shrubs ONLY, not vegetables) - it gets that "dirty dish rag" smell quickly. Doesn't hurt the plants, but it's smelly. Be sure you are using plant-safe soaps.

I would like to know what or how your cistren is constructed...Is it above ground....Is it homemade....can you post a picture for us.....
I have thought a cistren was a "below ground" water container, like a septic tank, but for "clean" water...
I've thought about renting a backhoe & putting in a "cistren" of some type to catch my rain water from the house gutters...

Suburbanmd, I actually did run his shirt through 3 sanitize cycles, so maybe it is the soap. Strange thing, on the 10 year old now broken machine, I only used warm/cold setting & FS. Perhaps the FS was masking the smell. Also, we have a recirculating hot water pump that was running, so basically it has instant hot water. Plus, the utility room is the first stop in the hot water loop. I can also verify this, as I just could not resist the temptation to put my hand in the flow of the water to test its temp. I have a load of linens to do tonight or tomorrow that I will do with the Kirkland HE liquid I have on hand and just let the machine do its thing as you say. The linens are not really that soiled, just one night stay by a guest, but still it will be interesting to see how it does and to check the soap level. Janet, it is ironic you mention your model number, as when the delivery folks first delivered my machine and placed it, husband looked at it and said it was not the right one. Turns out it was the WM2016CW! What I do not understand is why of all the models they took the water plus feature out of my chosen model. Do you find that the towels are actually in any water in the drum or have they absorbed it all? Mine has so very little you have to hunt for it and move them over just to find the frog puddle. Maybe this is quite normal for FL machines and being my first, I am used to the concept of water in a wash. I am still concerned about how it will do on the dog blankets and dog hair. How can it rinse the hair out when there is hardly any water? Only trial will tell. Oh, and yesterday it started leaking slightly from the front left hand corner! I wiped up water several times including when I first got up, and no, the only high water time was when it did the error code while wildly filling. I have read that over sudsing can cause leaks, so maybe this high water level reached that point? Then again, it might be something else. Do any of the FL machines actually spray the clothes to rinse them while they are spinning, much like the TL do? It seems like this would add a lot to rinsing the clothes. Thanks, Schutzhund

I think your biggest problem is probably using detergent not recommended for use in a front load machine. I sense it's not the "Ferrari of washers" doing a bad job but user error :) The Miele Care products (powders) have almost no suds visible at all. I used my SG 4X liquid this morning to wash a load of kids stuff and I couldn't believe the suds. They were still present in the second rinse. Liquids are by nature sudsier than powders and ones that do not contain suds inhibitors (like the one you're using) are way too sudsy for these machines. Clean your machine well with citric acid and bleach and start with a clean slate. Get a good powder - why does it have to be enzyme free?. I get that you don't want OBAs. Are you using the same detergent for diapers and clothes? You may want to consider using one for diapers (sans enzymes) and a better one for clothes. I honestly believe you need to use a product with (or add on your own) some sodium percarbonate. This is why I think that "green" detergents do not do a great job of maintaining a clean machine. A few do contain the right ingredients but some of them are just too simple in their formulas (IMHO).

@slogan3561 The cotton on the market today is fine. We have Mele washers and whites come out white. Keeping them white means you need to have the following: 1. If your water is hard (lots of minerals) a water softener should be used. 2. Heavily soiled whites should be pre-treated and soaked to loosen soil before the main wash. Use the washers soak cycle or a pre-wash. 3. A good detergent with the proper amount. Not the cheapest thing you find on sale. 4. A good Oxygen bleach. Make sure to use a water temp of 140F (60C) or higher to get the maximum effect from the oxygen bleach. If you have a clothes line, use it. The UV light from the sun works great to bleach whites and it's free! Many of today's washers are not built with the consumer in mind. They are built to get the maximum rebate from the government for their eco-friendliness.

Hello all,I know i'm responding to an old subject, but i'm new to the forum so I ask that you be patient with me. I have a cistern that is made out of cinder block.(sorry no picture right now) It was there when we recently got the house. Some wells in the area have gone dry. I want to line it with a fish safe liner. Why? because people are drilling for new wells and blasting the rock with dynamite which keeps cracking the cistern. OK the Q: If I do this can I drink the water safely? I just started to read the forum today and think it's great. I joined rightaway. Thanks db

You might want to check into growing a Soapberry tree. I've done some considerable homework on it since I'll be giving a talk before our local Master Gardeners monthly meeting on the benefits. The casings from 5 seeds put into a muslin bag actually does 2 washer loads.

I've started some seeds and plan to sell the plant. Sapindus Drummondii has a wide range. But, look for the variety that grows in your area. There is one.

But, also do your homework. Look up Soap Nuts, Soapberries, etc. You'll be glad you did. Regular laundry detergent puts phosphates back into our water system and rivers. The Gulf of Mexico has a dead zone that is incredibly huge due to this and all the run off from any number of chemicals used or dumped. What are we doing to ourselves?

In my backyard, I'd be using Soapberries if I had a cistern. You'll be surprised at how well they work. But, it will be difficult finding them on the web. Be diligent and you'll be rewarded.
