Picea pungens Thume planting and aftercare.

As a newcomer to blue spruce conifers, I have just purchased a Picea pungens Thume about 18 inches high in a pot from a nursery on the west coast of Scotland.

I live in Highland pwerthshire and was wondering about is the best way to plant this conifer and what aftercare is required.

I would suggest providing a sunny spot for this plant and also to give it plenty of water until it gets established. Best to get it in the ground rather than leave it in the pot if possible.

what is your soil ....

if anything but clay ... with good drainage ...

dig hole.. remove from pot .. untangle or trim circling roots ...

make inverted cone in hole.. set plant on top so that it is at the proper planting depth ..... refill half way with the soil extracted ... drench in thoroughly.. packing a bit to insure it wont sink .... when the water has drained ... refill the rest of the soil .... drench again ....

add a 2 foot mulch ring around the whole plant .....

do not water again.. until.. inserting your index finger.. to the second knuckle.. the soil feels dry or hot [hot meaning it will dry in a few days ..] ....

most conifers prefer a good drink .. and then NOT all that much water .... water deeply but infrequently ... and use your finger ...

when i plant.. it might end up weeks or months before more water is needed ... based on the vagaries of mother nature ...

make sure it goes into winter.. properly watered ....

you are responsible for PROPER watering.. for two years.. and then.. it should be pretty much free range thereafter ....

should be a pretty easy one to succeed with ...

let us know if clay is an issue

K4...In the link below I posted a few Picea p. cultivars for color comparison in another thread last Summer. You will have to decide for yourself on color preference. There is a flaw in the post with a double photo of R.H. Montgomery' Without a doubt the Picea p. 'Glauca Pendula' is a thing of beauty and my choice as #1. As far as the others placement is important and the color is better exemplified with the addition of companion plants to bring out the best in each one. No I don't have 'Ed Woods Blue'. Ken...You can tell the difference. The photos really don't show that difference. The 'Gentry's Gem' has a layered growth habit as opposed to the 'Globosa' with its tight growth habit. Also needles in the Gem are a little more steel gray in Summer. Ken, also your quote: how many blue blue spruce does one guy need." As for me as many as you can display without over kill. (Some but not many) pines/spruces/etc- will root but the vast majority do not. Juvenility has a powerful influence when rooting "trees." What I'm saying is that (some) culitvars are known to root, again, it's a very small minority. For better information, I refer you to the ultimate source book - and it will answer all your questions: Dirr, Michael A and Heuser, Charles, Jr. ÂThe Reference Manual of Woody Plant Propagation: From Seed to Tissue CultureÂ; (Second Edition 2006); Varsity Press, Inc. ISBN: 0942375092 or ISBN: 13: 978-0-942375-09-1 Keep in mind that what works for one guy may not work for the other. Your controlled environment/climate/prophouse/etc- all make or break the deal in the end. Aftercare, too, is not that easy! You could do everything right and then a hot day comes thru and next thing you know your grafts got cooked . . cuttings, whatever. It's a baby-sitting job of sorts. Whaas...I think that is a great selection for future additions. Not sure about the species sitkenensis 'Papoose'. I know sitchensis is legit but the other???. I see both when you Google it. ACS doesn't list it. Could also not be zone tolerant depending on who's listing it especially under sitchensis. Other then that all species names to be spelled in lower case. Show us some photos when they arrive. My to have list for fall/spring 2011/2012.
