hey ALL ...

its flowering tree time ... a bit early for most conifer budding ...

but i took a bunch of panarama pix... the trees give me a reason to stop taking pix of my boots .. lol ..

Nice presentation and it comes off great with all the different cultivars mixed in.

When you look at the overhead from Google Earth it shows me you have designed the perfect lay out for flow. That is a special talent.

How much property are you setting on?

How many species/cultivars??? or have you lost count.

Looks like the photo bug has set in and that's good ...keep posting.

I have a few more photos coming as soon as new growth matures enough to knock your socks off.

It looks, climate wise, I am about 2 weeks ahead of you as the Red Buds have just finished their spring time presentation.

Phenominal. Is that a redbud? Your grass looks great too.

Your conifers have IDEAL conditions to grow, with ample light and space. Those are two luxuries I do not have and envy. Keep up gods work! :p

Karen, you're right that first picture is Emperor of China. I try to have the old fashioned mums in each part of my gardens since fall is so beautiful here. Another plant that I like to have in all my gardens is Tagetes lemmonii. You don't really notice them too much until they bloom in November-December. They have buds but have not started to bloom yet. Tagetes lucida just started to bloom last week. John, I bought the leycesteria at BB's. I didn't know they were difficult. Now you have me worried. I grew it in a pot its first season and planted it out that fall. It came back on old stock but the stems that came up fresh from the ground were much nicer looking and I ended up cutting out the old branches. It tickles me enormously that I am making YOU jealous, teehee. Tammy thanks for the rudbeckia. You can decide what to trade it for. That muhly I think is called Pink Flamingo. We have it at BB's and it looks just like Shari's. Shari is the foliage on it flatter and more blue-green or gray than the regular pink muhly? Plant Delights lists it as muhlenbergia without a species name. I can't remember if we have a species name on our tag. I will have to check tommorrow. Adele

I remember my first time in Newport - walking around in the harbor area in the evening after a romantic dinner (before Ken's time, LOL) and everybody was talking about "A Snowball In Hell" and asking have you had one? Well, after a whole bunch of different people told us "you have to have one" and wouldn't tell us what it was - just that "you have to have one" - so of course we hit that bar - well, it wasn't a drink after all (like we thought it was) - it was an incredible concoction of - freshly made to order - a martini glass, freshly and completely dipped in hot fudge to coat the entire glass, scoop of vanilla ice cream, more hot fudge to cover, and some coconut on top. OMG - still warm fudge that you just lick off your glass - maybe you need a spoon for the ice cream, I forget :)

Rusty, I wanted to make the wild rice special. otherwise it will always be just a side. The recipes is very simple, not to take away the subtle nutty taste of wild rice. It is just wild rice with chestnuts cooked in concentrated beef mushroom stock. Wild rice is not sticky. I added tapioca flour as a binder. After that I rolled the rice into balls and froze them in the freezer. The frozen rice balls is very easy to coat with a simple egg batter and deep fried. It was very interesting to bite into a crispy ball with wild rice in it. I am working on a different batter to make it even more interesting. dcarch

yes those are redbuds in many of the pix ...

i have also posted pix in the shrub, and tree .. and perennial forums ... its raining to day ... lol ..

it was very cloudy last night ... the grass looks chlorotic in sunshine.. even i was surprised how good it looks in the pix ...

its been a long cold winter.. spring flush is really getting me juiced ....

I know you have lots of hostas, but I do not see any in these pictures. Are they in different locations because of sun requirments? Anyways, beautiful spring pictures.

because conifers are full sun .. dont grow well in shade ...

and the opposite for the hosta ...

hosta can grow in sun.. but need a lot of water... and i cant water all 5 acres thoroughly .... hence the beauty of conifers which can go free range after the second year.. in pure yellow sand ...

i have about 3 acres in sun.. and 2 acres in shade ... therefore.. 2 collections ...

MOSTLY .. i plant by bed ... so that all are on a schedule for one year of water ... second year in drought ... and then rarely ever ...

that is what i mean by FREE RANGE after the second year ... they only get water from me.. in the severest of drought.. and even that is nearly useless.. since the sand is nearly water repellent by that point ... regardless of mulch ...

Ken. Good reason. In my garden, it is partial shade everywhere. So I get interesting combinations but the individual plants may not be the best. The hostas are the more robust plant. It is nice to see your good looking conifers suning themselves. Gary

Beautiful Ken...you dislike lawn, but wow, does green grass ever make your beds pop out visually! I guess we all just like really really pretty pictures.
Looked up the history of lawns...a "nice" article is linked below. Jeez...there are books on the subject at Amazon. While other hits have lawns being another gross (as in BIG) American obsession similar to wasteful SUVs or Hallmark Holidays.
Now I'm starting to feel guilty for liking my lawn.....

What a work of love, Ken! Makes me tired just looking.

Now don't get insulted -- but viewing the overhead made me realize that the place is just screaming for a few discreetly installed putting greens. 8-))

2nd pic ... purple tree ... the horribly diseased, short lived ... disfigured... flowering plum .... watch for pix of my flushed out tri color beech in a few weeks.. if you want a purplish tree ....

gotta have one .. even if its for the short term ....

and vista.. now lets be honest .. if i were a golfer ... i wouldnt have a garden.. now would i ... i would waste all my time walking around someone else's garden.. and then drinking after. . .lol ...

i have always said.. probably to the detriment of my professional career ... that the best way to ruin a nice walk.. is to play golf ....

moved here in 1/2000 .... there were just 3 horse pastures.. you should be able to tell.. by size.. what trees were existing ...

there are at least 15 picea pungens around ... plus some giants on the neighbors property .. but not in these pix ...
