Where Am I? (Pix Heavy)

We had a winter storm warning out yesterday morning but the weather was clear, cold, & windless. So, we decided to take a little drive & have lunch before the snow started flying.

Clues:

1.) We drove for about 45 minutes;

2.) We didn't get on any highway/freeway;

3.) We crossed at least one state line;

4.) We went over two large bridges;

5.) It's obviously winter so I couldn't show you; but this town is famous for its hydrangeas; &

6.) This town is also famous for a prestigious race.

Here's some pictures...

Rocky shoreline & rather Gothic-styled summer cottage.

Here's a new summer cottage still under construction. The smaller building is the carriage house/caretaker's home. Fields of waving dune grass.

The town is also well represented by old beech trees (I love the structure of these trees in the winter.) Don't you wish they could talk?

Narrow streets lined with wonderful shops...everything from the finest of art galleries, antiques, clothing, to souvenir trinkets. Lots of fun places to eat also!

Private international yachts, commercial fishing boats, & recreational boats of all sizes/types share the beautiful harbor.

Cobble stone streets make for a bumpy ride!

A typical "McMansion" summer cottage over looking the sea.

I'm enjoying my caffeine-free Diet Pepsi here on the side terrace watching a lobsterman drag up a trap.

Simple. Yet elegant. Wouldn't you agree?

Lots of fun architecture.

Ah, we had a nice lunch & are heading back over the bridge towards home, Mystic.

So, where did we have lunch??

Jean001 - Nearly so for two plants. The tops were bad enough that I thought at first it was regular spiders. (I've got a resident population that helps me with the mosquitoes.) :>) Anyhow, when I looked thru the microscope, in an area that was less than 3/8" square, there were 6 six legged, 5 eight legged, 2 adults, 6 dead, and about 15 little white eggs. I actually only had the aphids (in any numbers) on 3 plants. The siberian plant in the picture was the worse case. I am still fascinated with the tiny size of all of these critters that can do so much harm in so little time. Anyhow, I will be spraying again this evening because of the rains we've had for the last two days. I was outside just a moment ago and saw an aphid on the plant in the pictures. I intend to do what I can to save it. I'm angry about this whole thing - mostly at myself.

This method of using compressed air to detach the skin completely in one piece is basically what they do for making Peking Duck with the fantastic crispy skin. Because the breast meat and the leg meat require different cooking time otherwise the breast meat will get tough and the tough leg meat will not get tender. It is difficult to have all the fat rendered and the skin made crispy without completely overcooking the meat if the skin is on the duck. By cleanly remove all the meat from the bones, you can have a beautiful duck stock made from the bones. This way you will also have all the priced duck fat collected. dcarch

Thank you everyone! That was a very pleasant Thanksgiving meal. John, the Gluten-free tempura was made with water chestnut flour and rice flour. Bbstx, cutting the carrot carets was not that difficult, the difficult one was the cutting of the tofu horizontally into 1/16" thick sheets. Wintercat and FOAS, the design of the challah was based on my concept. All probably makes no sense to the experts. The typical making of challah doesnÃ¢ÂÂt know what to do with the awkward beginning and the end of the braids, so they are tucked under the loaf and hidden from view. I feel that is contradictory to one of the symbolism of challah, which is Ã¢ÂÂThe wholeness of the universeÃ¢ÂÂ I decided the beginning and the end of the braids should not be treated as imperfections and hidden, and they donÃ¢ÂÂt have to be ugly looking. The six points also echoes the six points of the Star of David. Twelve humps from the braids recall the miracle of the 12 loaves for the 12 tribes of Israel. Round loaves, where there is no beginning and no end to symbolize continuity. Cathy, "What do you prepare for yourself on a daily bases?" And I did not invent the Mushroom Wild Rice Latkes recipe either, it was adapted from the KosherEye Web site The Wild Rice Latkes tasted very good because I didn't have Schmaltz, so I used the dripping from the roasted duck and rib roast, as it turned out, much tastier than Schmaltz, IMHO. It is always fun to engage your guests to go out of the regular food boxes a little. They really liked the purple Okinawan sweet potatoes, for instance. dcarch

Yes! Newport. That 'The Breakers'. Boy, they just don't build'em like that anymore. We ate at the Red Parrot & people watched for a couple hours, drove to Brenton State Park & watched the channel for awhile, took a few pictures & got home in time to hear our winter storm warning had been cancelled although we did get about 3" of snow & a bit of freezing rain early this morning.

I love Newport, too!

Was it too cold for the Cliff Walk? That and the cottage tours are my favorite activities in Newport.

Temps were in the mid-20s, I'd guess. With bright sunshine & no wind it didn't feel too cold. We didn't go down to the Cliff Walk. Instead, we went to Brenton Park. The park is one of my favorite places. In the summer, we take a picnic & watch the huge fancy kites. Brenton State Park is right on Ocean Avenue. The kites are so beautiful flying by the sea. I always love the mansion tours...learn something new with every trip. We became members of the Preservation Society so we could tour whenever we wanted year around, get private behind the scenes tours, & get front of the line priviledges plus the ability to rent Rosecliff for a private party.

In the summer, we take a couple long weekends & take our boat over, either catch a mooring or anchor outside the channel, dinghy to shore, & rent a scooter for a day. Lots of fun!

I love Newport! I was there last spring for a long weekend (before the season) and we had a blast. I'm jealous that you can get there so easily, but if I lived closer I would be spending a fortune there every chance I got. It is a really neat town!

We were in Newport the first weekend in November. A friend's 10 year old daughter takes sailing lessons there & they were having an end-of-season regatta. The weather was miserable...cold, drizzly, & very windy. We parked at Fort Adams & watched the race from the car! Brrrr!!

Here's some beautiful pictures & information on Cliff Walk. I'd never attempt it in winter. Water seeps out of the rocks & ices up. I'd be a goner for sure...I'm too unstable on my feet.

Thanks for the memories, I really enjoyed the Cliff Walk several years ago--almost as much as the hike in Cinque Terre.

My first thought was Cape Cod but as soon as I saw the pictures I knew it was Newport. I was there in September. I drove around Ocean Drive twice, once to look at the houses and another to look at the coastline.

It must have been wonderful in the winter, without the crowds.

Thanks. This was so educational. I've never been to a "cottage" before. Now I know what to picture in my mind when Chase talks about going to spend time at her cottage. I had no idea this was the kind of place she was going to! We have a condo at the ski areas, and I have friends with cabins in the mountains, or houses at the beach, but they are nothing compared to a "cottage". Wow!!! Chase sure is lucky!!

I remember my first time in Newport - walking around in the harbor area in the evening after a romantic dinner (before Ken's time, LOL) and everybody was talking about "A Snowball In Hell" and asking have you had one? Well, after a whole bunch of different people told us "you have to have one" and wouldn't tell us what it was - just that "you have to have one" - so of course we hit that bar - well, it wasn't a drink after all (like we thought it was) - it was an incredible concoction of - freshly made to order - a martini glass, freshly and completely dipped in hot fudge to coat the entire glass, scoop of vanilla ice cream, more hot fudge to cover, and some coconut on top. OMG - still warm fudge that you just lick off your glass - maybe you need a spoon for the ice cream, I forget :)
