Hi, I've been lurking around this forum for awhile now but havn't posted that much yet. Somebody started a Tomato madness disease thread over in the tomato forum and I thought it might be fun to have one here.

To start it off,

you know you have DMD when you go outside in the middle of the winter to see if your daylilies are waking up yet.

Chance, I don't think you are "mad". I think you just haven't been educated yet in exactly HOW to count roses. HOW TO COUNT ROSES -- Kim_SC at Gardenweb 1. Mini roses donÂt count. 2. Floribundas Â because they are not full-fledged hybrid teas Â count as half. 3. Shrubs, Climbers, Ramblers, Old Garden Roses, etc. donÂt count because they can be considered "landscaping." 4. Roses not planted Â or in pots Â donÂt count. (See the "Territory" Clause). 5. Roses that were discounted count as half. 6. Roses received as gifts donÂt count. 7. Odd numbers must always be rounded offÂif youÂre out of room, round the number down. For every one-hundred, divide by two. This is known as a "stock split." 8. Roses whose names you donÂt know or can't remember obviously donÂt count. 9. Roses that are on Shovel Prune Watch donÂt count; the roses that replace them also donÂt count as they cancel each other out. Duplicate/multiples count as one as they are considered a set. Roses that are not planted in a bed donÂt count. (See the "Landscaping" Addendum). Bareroots donÂt count because they are dormant when they arrive; once you plant them and they start to bud outÂwell, youÂve already done your count, so you will just have to wait until next seasonÂby which time youÂll be sure you already counted them. Mislabeled roses donÂt count because you probably already have one of them somewhere, which has already been counted onceÂprobably. Anything less than Grade 1 counts only a fraction, and since fractions are not whole numbers they can be rounded off (remember the rounding off rule). Roses that you think you might give away can be excluded from the countÂmakes it easier to part with them; if, by some chance you wind up keeping them, wellÂoh well. HTs that get huge and wind up taking more than one space should be counted twice, but remember the duplicate rule. NowÂif, after counting, you have under a hundred roses, you must immediately place some ordersÂand they donÂt count because theyÂre in transit and therefore not in the ground. Roses ordered on a whim really donÂt count because they were never on a list. (This is known as the list rule: If itÂs not on a list, it doesnÂt existÂmost likely). A friend on a non-hippi list sends a photo of her cool CAKE and there is a hippi in the background. She replies that she knows nothing of this Apple Blossom (not an AB) and you say that it looks like Pink Diamond and suggest she looks it up on the internet. She replies that she did a GOOGLE search for Pink Diamond and lo and behold her search reveals a photo that you took posted on this photo. She then refers to you as a wealth of knowledge and starts bombarding you with questions...and of course you encourage her to join the FORUM!! K

Ok, now I know I've lost it. I'm bidding on high dollar seeds and couldn't even grow one from my own seed pod last year. Last year was the first time I've grown a daylily in my gardens. I have over 500 named tall bearded irises. When I saw how far daylilies have come from the old fashion ones like my mother and grandmother use to grow it was love at first sight. Can any of you relate to that? LOL Anyway, I did get about 15 of those seeds to sprout and grow to about 4 inches, then the fungus gnats got them. Of course at the time I didn't have a clue what was happening to them. That and the fact that I probably didn't plant them in deep enough pots for their roots. I was just thrilled that I did get a few to sprout after reading that they were hard to start from seed. (Which I now believe was not the truth, I just think you need to know how to get them to germinate). Now some of you people that are complaining you don't have enough room. You can send your extra plants, seedlings, or seeds to me and I'll grow them out for you. I have a little over 35 acres to play with. LOL Of course I'd have to have at least a start of each one in return. Any takers..... I didn't think so. I dream real big. Just like everything else in Texas. Marian Marian

I had a lot of prolifs here this year. Didn't keep track of most of them because they are just a pain to deal with in this climate (have to be potted and babied through the winter). Maybe I'll pay more attention when I have a greenhouse to winter them in. But I did root a variegated one from 'White Stripe' just to see how easy/hard it is to do. And I will probably root one from Mahieu's 'Volcan Fuego' after the pod that is on that scape finally ripens and one on 'Desperado Love'. I also saw them on 'Broadway Gal' and 'Art Of Seduction' among others that I don't remember now.

Your kitchen table is covered with pots of sprouted daylily seeds, because your 16' x 14' greenhouse is full to the hilt with daylily seedlings, and you are still buying seeds on the lily auction, and you don't know where you will plant all those seedlings because your backyard is full of daylilies and 400 seedlings that should bloom this summer, and your neighbor has already let you plant a 30' by 3' row of daylilies in her yard, and YOU STILL ARE BUYING SEEDS ON THE LILY AUCTION!!!

There was a thread awhile back that I so enjoyed reading and it was very similar to this. I can say that I have DMD because I cancelled my expanded cable television so I could have the extra money to buy new daylilies. Also, I had my trees all limbed up so there would be more sun in my yard for the daylilies. This past summer the county had someone come around reevaluating for real estate taxes and the poor woman made the mistake of asking about some of my daylilies that were in the front. An hour later the 'tour' finished. She looked like she was ready to take a break. Oh Well, She asked, right?

I have a few reasons. :)

1. When you need to buy a children's size rake so you can fit it in between all the markers.

2. When early in the spring your neighbor comes outside and asks if you're looking for Easter eggs.

3. When you ask for a new ptouch and more plant markers for Valentine's day.

4. When your friends and family dread coming over for a get together - not because you may show slides of children or vacations, but because you'll show slides of daylilies.

5. When you convince dh that the 100 year old oak tree in the back yard is dying (so he will have it cut down and you can have more sun and room for daylilies).

When I start wearing Depends so I can not be interrupted while I spend all my waking hours admiring the DL's...no, it's not that bad....yet.....but you can never tell.....:)...lloyd

Why bother with Depends? My Granny used to just pee in the garden. People in the family still talk about her beautiful plants. I'm proud to say that I get my green thumb from her. And yes, I'm just as goofy. Once last fall I was working in my greenhouse, and I waited too long and just peed in the greenhouse and went about my merry way planting daylily seeds, no interuptions.

Nice to see that there are others like me. I wish I had a long lost twin. I am the only girl with 5 brothers, and I feel like I have a missing piece out there somewhere.
