moving a rooted container citrus dilemma

I have a Cocktail grapefruit in a 14" container (14"Wx12"H) and I wanted to move it to a sunnier location. But I discovered it had 4 good sized roots going into the ground and the dilemma is whether to try to dig up the roots (and move them along with the container) or just cut them off.

This is a 2-3 year old tree with leaves that would droop if not watered everyday in the summer heat. Since I didn't know about these extra roots, I never watered the ground around the container and I wonder if this was why the leaves would droop so readily...that there were fewer roots inside the container because it was using the larger roots in the ground.

All this leads to the question...would cutting off the roots(that go into the ground) lead to an increase in the number of roots inside the container and thus decrease the need for extra watering in hot weather. Or would it do the opposite?
