indoor blood orange tree dying?

Hi,

I have an indoor blood orange tree, it was covered in little oranges but has lost all but one of them. The leafs are falling off of it so fast I can't keep up with them. It looks like all the leafs fall off one branch then the branch starts to die. It had all kinds of new growth on it but now that is all dying off. I'm at a loss on what to do. The leafs look very healthy even after they have fallen off. I keep the tree in a room that is like a heated porch and I live in Maine. If anyone has any ideas I'm open?

Hi Patricia..how warm/hot is the porch?
Was your tree outside in summer? If so, how long has it been since bringing indoor?
You said, "the leaves look very healthy even after they have fallen off." So you're saying foliage haven't any yellow or brown? Just green leaves that drop???

Is the air dry? Do you use a humidifer? Dry air causes all sorts of problems. (for plants, pets and people.
They sell hygrometers (meters that read and display humidity) from 7.00 and up. They come in handy.
Placing plants inside deeper/wider saucers filled w/stones or pebbles, then adding a little water, called a pebble tray, helps the air somewhat. Daily misting keeps foliage clean and moistens air a bit, especially if plants are grouped together.
Since leaves aren't discoloring, it's difficult diagnosing a problem.
Even if insects were the reason your citrus is losing leaves, there's usually some indication of their presence. I'd check leaves, stems and soil to be on the safe side.

Don't fertilize during winter months. Set your tree in the most sun possible. Water well, but let soil dry between waterings.
If possible take your citrus to the sink or shower and hose..I'd do this once a wk.
Though some people are skeptical about this product, I'd buy a bottle of Superthrive Hormone and Vitamins. Follow directions. Good luck, Toni

Hi Toni,
The porch temp ranges from about 57 to 74 the lowest being night time hours of course. I had it outdoors all summer and when I brought it in (end of Sept) I thought it may of had bugs I bought some stuff to put on it but have seen no signs of bugs at all believe me I've looked it over carefully. Our humidity in the house is awful (68) we have just had to purchase a dehumidifier because the humidity in the house was ruining our windows. I live on the ocean. I did recently try repotting it I know that's not the greatest thing to do while it had fruit but I'm getting desperate.

MrsG, I would contact Four Winds about growing a blood orange indoors. I wouldn't say they are any more sensitive than other citrus with regard to having wet roots - all citrus do not do well with that. So, make sure you have well draining potting mix for any of your citrus. And, not necessary to set up a light box as Steve has done. This is his choice, but not everyone is going to be so inclined or have the ability/space to do something this drastic. You can place your citrus in a bright south or west facing window, and if you can provide additional full spectrum lights, that should be enough to keep any citrus growing indoors. MeyerMike and several other folks grow their indoor container citrus in this manner with lots of success. You don't need to provide additional heat, if you house is comfortably warm. As long as your temps aren't below maybe 55 or so, your trees will grow just fine, and continue to flush and bloom inside. For Blood oranges, they will color up if there is enough change between daytime and nighttime temps, so, being in a house with steady temps, you may not see as much coloring as you would with a blood orange planted outside. But, they should still be very good. I would recommend a Moro orange, as they have the most pigmentation, and you'd stand the best chance of getting the most pulp pigmentation with a Moro. You have the ability to bring your trees out in warmer weather, so they should all do well, including a blood orange :-) Patty S. First in answer to your pollination question, you don't describe your pollination techniques, but yes - you will need to pollinate indoor citrus by hand. Almost all varieties of citrus (including blood oranges and meyer lemons) are self-pollinating. Buy a new small paintbrush and lightly brush the open flowers on all the plants. Just remember that citrus will bloom profusely and set only a small percentage of fruit (maybe 10 - 15% of the flowers on my plants), but then drop the majority of these immature fruit. So, only a very small percentage of their blooms ever become mature fruit. Also, younger trees sometimes tend to hold fruit less well than older trees. With regards to cuttings, your technique sounds right. In addition to misting, try keeping the cuttings covered with a plastic bag to maintain moisture. Plant the cuttings in a perlite / peat mixture - I'd use more perlite than peat. Don't over water. Keep the rooting mix moist but not wet. Remember that some varieties root more easily than others.
