What DH and I did on my birthday

A couple of pics of where DH was and what he was doing.

The bigger fish is a 9lb. 2oz. Cutthroat, DH beat son's record of a 8lb. something.

The new bigger cabin, the roof is on, door in, but windows have yet to be framed in, the bedrooms will be on the second floor.

Well maybe not, my birthday present was a new flat screen TV :o)

Annette, that cabin is in a picture perfect spot. I could live there! Just beautiful.

Be sure to show us when it is all finished. Will you be able to stay there during the coldest months?

Glenda, I have yet to go up there, it's a 6 hour drive from where we live, add another 2 hours on to that for DS2, they have 10 acres just outside of Victoria.
Our son and his wife spend as much time there as possible, they built a smaller cabin for starters and when our DIL retires they will be spending even more time there. They have a generator and most of the comforts of home. They do go up there in the winter and sometimes spend Christmas there. I hear the plan is to get me up there next summer :o). I think our son deep fried a turkey there last christmas, pretty fancy but then he's quite the chef.

DS2 built this cabin by himself in three weeks, having to cart all the materials by hand in a 12 foot boat. Mind you he had his supervisor (wife) handy if he needed a hand :o). The end wall will have windows overlooking the lake.

Yay for you! Great birthday gift. But now you've made me totally jealous. I've watched the last of my possible spaces shrink over the last few years and I'm seriously eyeing my neighbors spare lot, but husband keeps saying 'don't even think it. I've got ten daylily clumps just home from the daylily farm along with 8 pots of already purchased to fit in my remaining spaces. I'll have to be narrowing a couple paths. On the front of the border plants, NJmomma, I think it depends on what one has already in sections. Pardon me is 18 inches and looks great in front if the second in taller. There is but a couple inches difference between height in Pardon Me and Siloam Baby Talk. Also depends on if one does a 'traditional' type border or gardens to a different tune as in cottage-style. Glad you asked Annie! Antipasto - calimari; arancini, tomato, red onion and basil crostini; roasted garlic and shaved piave crostini. Insalata della casa Secondi - ravioli ai quattro formaggi; margherita pizza; chicken piccata Dessert - vesuvio chocolate cake; Italian cheesecake Don't know about the cheeses at the "afterparty". Two were soft - one a very creamy brie and one more of a goat cheese with a vein of blue cheese. One of the hard cheeses tasted like a mild swiss with a nutty kind of thing going on, and the other I completely can't remember. I think the birthday boy was pleased. He was very complimentary after everyone left. While he claims he's not one to savor the spotlight, I think he secretly enjoys it very much. And he did send out an email thanking everyone for celebrating with us with lots of kind words for me. Always nice to be appreciated. AM

@gerina, lh, mattie and FD, First, the bday party was fine. No fireworks, no confrontations, like I posted above, I treated BM like an invisible woman. It was held at SD's home so she invited whom she wanted. Yeah she paid for 1/2 of the party but so did I! Not my place at all. I'm sure SD invited her because she is trying have us "all just get along." Why BM keeps showing up is a mystery to me other than these functions are being held at her daughter's home, which is not a good enough reason. I basically told DH afterwards that I will not go to any more functions where BM is present unless they are major like a wedding or a funeral. They don't understand boundaries and why BM keeps her hand in is the weirdest thing to me. DH clearly doesn't want to rock his adult kids boat. Why they want to keep her in OUR mix is beyond my understanding. Father's Day was a whole different situation not surpisingly. I did not call his adult kids or even text them about it. DS7 had a gift he made at school, I gave him a gift and DH even got a joke gift from our dog. No gifts or cards from the adult kids. Just a text from SD and a call from SS. DH later called SD. I'm not family soooo...I left my two cents out. DH was happy with the gifts from DS7, me and the dog, we went to a nice lunch and kept it moving.

Sandy- Have you ever indicated in all these years, to either DH or SD's, that you'd like to be the one to throw him a party every once in a while (or just once)? How did they react when you discussed it with them previously? Did they say "no way!" or do anything to indicate that you would have to spring it on them, ambush-style, if you wanted to do it? In other words, what prompted you to plan it all without letting them know you were doing so? Of course you shouldn't feel like you CAN'T throw a party for your husband, and if that's literally what everyone told you, that was unfair of them. The thing I disagree with is the way you handled it. Clueing them in that you even had an interest in doing this would have been a good start, and this year in particular, you should have said "I know you girls love to throw your Dad his birthday party every year, but I'd like to have a more active role. And after all these years, I'd like to be the one doing the majority of planning for DH's birthday party this year. You're welcome to pitch in, and I'm not trying to 'usurp' the wonderful tradition you've had with him all these years... I just want a chance to provide it for him this year, and I hope you can udnerstand that. I'm going to start planning things this week..." Without any of this being said to the SD's, you've unfortunately made it come off like a hostile act of 'revenge'. What's more, you're now plotting to exclude them from their father's birthday altogether, which is out of line. This is most likely what's prompted their hostile *reaction*, far more so than the fact that you want a turn to host the party, which in itself should be understandable to them if you take the time to discuss it with them in a spirit of fairness. As for the looming question of who will host next year's birthday party, the only adult thing to do is for one of you (you or one of the SD's) to say: "It seems like this past birthday party for Dad was the subject of some resentment all around. I guess we all love Dad and we all want to feel like an active part of doing something nice for him on his birthday. What's a fair solution we can come up with so everyone can feel like they have this opportunity, and of course, so we all can share the special day with him? Trade off years for who hosts at their house? All of us plan the party together every year? Hold it at a 'neutral' location like a park or restaurant? Let Dad tell us what HE wants, and if it's for us all to take a hike instead of bickering, then we do so?" If this remains undiscussed and a fair compromise not found (or sought), his birthday will continue to be more and more of a nightmare every year because his 'women' don't know how to grow up and get over themselves. Not exactly fair to HIM, whose birthday this is supposed to be about, and I wouldn't blame him if after a few years of this he just wants to go to Hooter's with his buds.

What a beautiful place to have a cabin, away from this crazy world we live in. The views are beautiful!

A flat screen TV sounds nice. Enjoy.

WOW the drive wouldn't be a problem as I would only make it the one time LOL. Up there and that would be that. Very similar area to my uncle's place on Oak Island in Lake of the Woods MN. He had the resort for years and years. His son took it over and then finally sold it. I have talked to the owners in the past year or two. Would never recognize the area now. It is FULL of resorts and they have updated all. None of the old cabins are even there anymore.

Annette, I forgot to mention the work you did. I count mine by pickup loads too! I am impressed.

Congrats on the flat screen TV. What I love about them most is that you can pick them up and move them so easily. In fact they are so light weight the one in the LR came with anchors to fasten it down to the stand.

BTW, I got a new pressure canner.

Annette, Jim has a nice catch there. Did they eat them or is Scott going to mount the big one for Jim. That would be hanging on my wall in the living room... LOL

Sue, there's lots of big ones in that lake, it's just a matter of catching them, not easy. No it's not going to be mounted it's in the freezer in pieces. Asking Scott to mount it would be like rubbing salt into the wound LOL.

That lake is stunningly beautiful. I would love to canoe around in it all day long and try to catch some of those outstanding fish. What a dream place for a cabin.

On the other hand, you got some serious gardening done, and it's hard to beat that. But ooooh, that lake is so purty. :-)

I can hardly believe that your son got all the materials in using a 12 foot boat. Where there's a will, there's a way. And he built it in 3 weeks? Wow. I think it would take me a week just to shingle the roof.

TM, the lumber was dropped off roadside, then carried down to the boat, then a short run to the property which the kids lease from the government. The foundation was poured in the spring so that had already been done, he had to haul the gravel in for that too.

Nell I don't know how picturesque looking at the prunings and weeds is, but it was a very satisfying feeling once I'd loaded them all in the truck :o). DH is the one who had the picturesque view.
