Comments (6)ditto what patty said, too much water. But really it's in a moisture retentive soil which will rot the roots. More plants are killed by too much water than too little. azatrol is what I have used in the past for soil critters, it's a concentrated neem oil, where as gnatrol is a biologic microbe which targets some bugs. azatrol knocked out the fungus gnats for me in 2 doses. But really what's happening is your roots are rotting so your plant can't absorb nutrients or water so the leaves shrivel up and die. Root health = plant health! I'm not sure it's bugs, usually the soil bugs are just annoyances, and unless you see spider webs (spider mites) or scale on the under side, chances are you just have a bad soil. Here's what I would do in your situation. Gather the parts for the gritty mix, get a 4 oz of dyna-grow neem oil, 1 gallon sprayer. remove all soil from the plant (wash it off) then spray down the entire plant in the shower with neem oil (including roots), Then repot in gritty mix, wash the dust out, and then spray 2 more times at 2 week intervals. Water with foliage pro every few days....See MoreThe Case of the New Citrus Owner & the Dying Kumquat Tree
Comments (18)I have been calling around/visiting several plant nurseries near where I live in search for pine bark fines for the 5-1-1 mix. So far, no luck. The nurseries all tell me that they have pine bark mulch and/or a potting bark mixture. Would an alternative for pine bark fines work with the 5-1-1 mix, and if so, what should I look for? From what I have read, I need to let the mix sit for roughly 2 weeks prior to planting my tree to let the lime do its thing. I have obviously been able to fine pine bark fines online around $10 per quart, but wanted to find something and make my mix right away before the season changes. Would this just be the better option? Also, how long should I keep my tree barerooted for?...See MoreDying kumquat tree
Comments (19)Thanks all. What I'm confused by is that the soil seems quite moist to me - when I lifted the plant, basically everywhere except the top 2 inches of soil were damp, including near the center of the rootball. I do use a moisture meter, but I always confirm by feeling the soil that it drags up with it. Over the past month, I have watered the tree less frequently but only because it's stayed damp longer - it almost seems like with less healthy leaves, less of the water I give it is being used... As a quick update, a few more leaves have begun shrivelling up and it seems all of the large branches are brown. However, when I scratch the trunk, it does appear green underneath. Vladimir - just to confirm what you mean by "soaking the pot" - do you mean taking the pot and placing it in a tray of water so that it absorbs water from the holes at the bottom (sort of like in this photo)?...See Moredrichard12
