cactus id for fruit

I have 2 cactuses that were planted before I moved to my place and I am trying to figure out if the fruit is edible or not. They are upright, about 5-6 ft., round circumference, the flowers are white (bees love them!) and beautiful, the fruit is pink to red and oval (like an egg, but a little bigger). If you need more info ask me. I don't have a site to post the pics on.

Ok... pretty sure it is the second after looking at more pictures. My dad ended up helping me.

So now my question is when should you pick the fruit? I think I picked mine too soon.

You might want to check out growing cacti commercially in israel. Their water situation is similar to ours and they're producing tons of fruit in the desert there, prickly pear and cereus peruvianus (sp?). Sorry, but no San Pedro in your photos. The photo on the left is a Myrtillocactus geometrizans in front, with Organ Pipe (Stenocereus thurberi) in the background. The photo on the right is Neocardenasia herzogiana. The white fuzzy ones are probably Espostoa. cd

I see them everywhere. I've been looking into growing them, so I can have a Fred Flintstone Sangria too! In case you need a Margarita- 3 ounces tequila blanco 1/2 -ounce Cointreau or TripleSec or Curacao 1 1/2 ounces lime juice 2 ounces prickly pear syrup Kosher salt and turbinado sugar, for garnishing the glass :) Have a lovely time with your Cactus Juice!

Probably Cereus peruvianus. The fruit is edible.

All cacti fruit is edible, but most are so small folks forget to taste them.

A friend of mine has a Cereus Peruvians and she waits until the fruit cracks before picking it. The fruit is somewhat similar to dragon fruit with white pulp and little black seeds, much like kiwi. Enjoy your fruits!

Cactus Kings were covered with fruit last week when we were there, he lets his open then eats them but I think when they turn red they are ripe. Mine has never produced fruit so I'm jealous.
