I think I may have found a golden 'whipcord' thuja sport

I found this 1/2 way up a 30" T.occidentallis 'Watnong Gold'. Looks interesting. It's the tip of a branch that occurred from last years, growth.

Butch - my clarification of the 3 eyes is on the Woolly Mammoth plant. Photos #3 and #4. Photos #1 and #2 are indeed a different plant that I think may be hyacinthina, but I am not sure. So the 4 photos I posted: Photo #1 closeup of white centered green edged sport eye in an all green plant. -Prep sink. This may be useful in a multi-cook household or a huge kitchen, but I hardly ever used the one I had and it was just once more thing to clean. -Garbage disposal. My worms do a much better job, don't take up electricity and never smell or require cleaning. -Fancy multi-function toaster, oven, rotisserie, pizza, etc. Does nothing well. -Trash can with a motion sensor. Everyone I know who has one has them break in under a year. Mine only took 4 months to break. A foot pedal is much more reliable and a lot cheaper to replace. -Stainless steel sink. What a pain to clean. You can call it patina, butafter a while they don't look clean no matter what you do. (The one in my apartment right now looks positively foul no matter how much Barkeeper's Friend you use.) Of course cast iron will eventually chip and I don't know if the granite composite sinks will stand the test of time -Range-top grill. Only pay for these if you have a bodacious vent system and no way to have an outdoor grill. They are better than the George Foreman-like grills but not a patch on a decent outdoor gas grill or charcoal. ---- As for sink tip-outs... since discovering them I have knocked the front panel off every sink in every home I've rented or owned and installed these. In the bathroom they are perfect for the tweezers and nail files and such. In the kitchen, the sponges, scrubbers, stoppers and the toothbrush you use for cleaning around the faucet plate are neatly hidden away but close at hand. Love 'em!

When Willows said "scions", I think that's a terrn generally reserved for grafting material. People otherwise call them cuttings. I _think_ I've read here and there of something being difficult to graft...in the sense of a specific cultivar rather than an entire genus. Of course, grafting is more of than not these days reserved for things that are difficult to _root_ at least as far as ornamental horticulture goes. (the opposite seems the case in agriculture, where grafting is often easier and more productive than rooting) It's not uncommon at all to read of things being difficult to root...whether clones, species, or entire genus like oaks. It could be that the best option will be sending it to someone who has really mastered commercial cloning, like Briggs. You get the impression they were producing that purple yucca for a while not because a purple yucca was a logical compliment to their main business, which is rhododendron liners, but because they were the only company on the face of the planet that was willing to figure out how to clone it.

Jo, you are so organized and have great research impulses. What is a 30 degree heat wave? 30 degrees higher than the usual average temp? and it stays in that range for a long time? I know that further north in the midwest for example, they have temps a lot hotter than we do, but we have a generally higher humidity. And, I suppose I'm gardening in two zones, with a 8b zone winter and a 9a zone for summer. Lows and highs but humidity in the upper reaches is a constant. Growing hosta in my locale is a learning experience, climate wise. I like to cool with a mist, which does not splash water on the leaves or drown the plants. Even with high humidity, I think they need the moisture to be there. It sounds counter intuitive but it seems to work for me. At least, I can stand to go into the garden while the mist is there, the mosquitos are not so bad until all stray breezes die down at dark thirty.

I'll cut it half Edwin. I was taking cuttings on the plant anyway and when I found that I just snipped it off thinking 'weird'. It didn't register completely until I realized what I actually, had.........

Just an update:

The sport has calloused and there are nubs surrounding the base of the cutting... so I will keep it in the prop chamber for another six-weeks until I see root expansion. It's on it's way.

Yes, Edwin, I only made one cutting. It's because I would've rather had one perfect size cutting than two small ones. Regardless, it's gonna grow.

Whipcord is an awesome plant and a yellow one would be even more awesome. Very cool.

This branch looks like a 'Whipcord', which doesn't mean that it will grow like a 'Whipcord'.
The 'Whipcord' is a Thuja plicata cultivar, while Dax's one is a mutation of a Thuja occidentalis.
The only way to speak of a golden 'Whipcord' is when you find a yellow branch mutation on it. Unfortunately the title of this topic is misleading...

That's why I didn't capitalize it Edwin ;0)

The other point is this. This sporting-branch was found not at the tip of the plant where you see new-growth as a leader growing on Thuja's, it was found in the middle of the plant and growing horizontally or parallel (to the ground). This is indeed a sport.
