Daylily nurseries/hybridizers in the Northeast?

Hello all,

I KNOW there are MANY great hybridizers working in the South, but I've heard of very few in the Northeast. Can you name any that you know of (or have visited) in the Northeast, especially in NY/PA? I'd love to visit a nursery/hybridizer in person someday, but I can't drive two days to do it.

PLEASE don't ask me where I'd put the new plants I'd be sure to buy if I did make such a trip - we've got the incredible shrinking lawn as it is. I'm eyeing a patch of grass by the driveway turnaround for future garden expansion.

(I suppose my other solution would be to start my OWN daylily nursery and breeding operation. Then I could invite all of YOU to come UP HERE, and I could work with northern-hardy plants. Hey, I can dream, you know! The Lord has led us down strange paths before. . . .)

How far are you from Melanie Mason? Isn't she around Saratoga?

I have never met her, but from the email robin and a couple of emails she sent me when I was just beginning dabbing pollen, she appears to be a super nice person.

It sounds great, a wonderful way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I've got town meeting duties in early November, so I'll miss it, but thanks for posting it. It would be great if we could have a calendar here somewhere; someone has posted a link to a site that has a calendar, but I've lost track of it.

Same name, but the company is now run by Greenheart Farms. Terrific plants, they are probably the best minis around now. You can also try Rosemania.com (mostly exhibition-quality minis), Almost Heaven Roses and Roses Unlimited. Ashdown has a few minis too. All are on the east coast. From Canada, Palatine Roses and Pickering Nursery sell minis grafted on R. multiflora rootstock (the others sell own-root), and ship excellent plants. You might also try some of the smaller polyanthas.

Hi everybody.. Canna, you can imagine my excitement the other day when I was at Big Lots and I saw "your" feeder. I felt like I struck gold! You know how Big Lots is, one day it's there, the next day it's gone. I was just hoping that you hadn't gone and got a new one yet. I am so happy to have been able to do a *nice* thing for you!! You deserve it!! Oh, and of course I got one for my birds too!! Well, I think I did a NICE thing early this morning for my DH. He was so excited the other day 'cause he "traded" a few beverages with Canna and her DH, Doug. He enjoyed it so much, and starting poking around on the web. Well wouldn't ya' know it......he found a beer trading website. He wanted to trade soooo bad, but of course he's a "newbie" and no one would give him a chance. I was starting to feel sad for him. I kept encouraging him, and finally a nice fella in Colorado offered a trade. DH was thrilled, and came looking to me for help packing and shipping. Well, I "taught" him how to pack everything nicely, and had him even add a note. He was so proud of his 1st trade. And to be extra nice, I told him I would drop it off and pay for the shipping. All $17.50 of it!!! It was quite a heavy box. I also tried to do something nice for Anita today, but it backfired on me. I was out and about and I saw some Iris rhizomes that were so gorgeous. I immediately thought of Anita a picked up a couple. Came home and checked her "garden" page.....yep, she's got it already! Darn! Oh well, It's the thought that counts! I'm sure I can find a nice spot for them here somewhere......... Hi Becky Glad you are feeling good. That will be so nice to have your schooling finished. May will be here before you know it! Joey, pics?? We're waiting...... Is is possible to be the Martha type AND the Maxine type??? Actually, I think I always try to start out "Martha" and end up "Maxine". That's okay though. Marea, you get yourself into so many neat jobs. And then to be called "Sweetheart"! Perfect! It sounds very interesting. Just don't get bit, lol. Well, I better go cook something. Hello all, Got a few pictures to share...Yea I got it figured out. Isn't it kewl..love my garden junk..lol...DH felt sorry for me..Ya see I was working and fell and kinda of hurt a rib and my fore arm..Really really nice bruising going on..Not to worry with a few meds all is fine..as long as the meds don't wear off..LOL..Trellis is what your looking at by the way..the black rod iron..he sanded,painted and put it together for me..Have an clematis going up it ..hopefully I just love this..Hopeing to grow some tpye of vine up this too..so it looks like an umbrella..Please don't look at the mess behind it..Was a deck there..took it out last year and haven't gotten around to do anything there yet.Heve to move my close line and then move around alot of the gardens..Then just put down some slate..ya ya thats all..LOL and YES I want my close line BACK.. Sorry this isn't the best picture..first time it's bloomed for me.Only know it as an Trout lily. Yes we behind all of you..thats zone 4..LOL Can't you just smell them..Hummm..spring..=) Anita ..Hugs hun...hope all works out for you.. LOVE,just love the window.Now just have to figure out where I can put one..=) Pictures are great..love seeing everyones gardens and blooms.

I'll have to bookmark Melanie Mason's site - I saw QUITE a few of her introductions that I really like, and to visit her farm would be a long day trip for me. Perhaps next year - our lives got thrown a curve yesterday, courtesy of a left turn where I stopped and signaled to turn (waiting for oncoming traffic to pass), and the large pickup pulling a trailer behind me didn't stop at all and hit us at 30MPH or so. . . . SO, we're recovering from that (thankfully just a very bad fright, and bruises and pulled muscles galore for the kids and I, nothing worse), but the car is toast, and we're not going anywhere out of town any time soon.

On Melanie's website I really like (of her intros):

Zolock Gardens is in Belle Vernon, PA. I received an order from Steve Zolock earlier this month that was great.

Laurel so sorry about your auto accident and happy you and the family are OK.

Why not consider a trip to Darrell Apps' Woodside Nursery in NJ. From Westchester, it should be a nice day trip. Get that sister of yours interested - doesn't she owe you a favor?

Lancaster is close enough for a day trip for us - we were just down there in April. Now I have another reason to go down there. Mr. Herr has some nice intros too - especially 'Tall Dark and Handsome.' Thanks!

I'll need to look up Belle Vernon, PA. I can't place that one at all right now. I'll have to try MapQuest. What did you get from Zolock Gardens? Do they have a website?

I'll have to see how far Woodside NJ is from us (I'm near Binghamton). I've been trying to get my friends and family interested in daylilies - my parents have quite a few, but they were just trying to fill a large driveway turnaround bed at their new house and bought daylilies willy-nilly all over the place at box stores and nurseries, and didn't keep any of the labels. They've been the same way about irises. Lots of lovelies, but NO IDEA what most of them are. I'll keep working on my sister, but I think *I* owe *her* after she sat in the ER with us for a couple hours Wednesday, then drove us all home. Maybe I'll give her - A DAYLILY!
