Calamondin orange dropping leaves.

I have a Calamondin orange tree that I been minding for 4 years now. I put it out on my patio in the summer and bring it inside in the fall. Last year when I brought it in I also brought in some unwanted bugs. So this year I watered it well and sprayed it with insecticidal soap just before I brought it in. That was about a week ago. Now for the last 4 or 5 days it has been dropping it's leaves and some of it's fruit. I'd say 6 or 7 leaves each day and 1 fruit per day. Should I not have sprayed it? What should I do now to stop the leaf drop?

It is not uncommon for citrus to drop a large amount of leaves when changing environment, and when people bring them indoors from outside this is a common problem. Some slowly introduce them for a few hours each day, increasing the time indoors until it is adapted. My meyer dropped over half of its leaves when I first bought it, but is recovering nicely.

Make sure the air is humid - spray the leaves, get a pebble tray or humidifier, whatever you can get to help with humidity. The air indoors is dry from our central heating compared to the fresh air outside!

I wouldn't worry too much, unless the leaves look unhealthy before they fall. Just let it adapt to its new home, reduce fertilizer and water carefully - it will probably need water less now that its approaching winter.

I would let the soil dry out all the way. Citrus do not like wet feet. Your watering pattern should insure that the soil is completly dry before watering. I have a calamondin in a 12 inch clay pot and my soil is 100% profile. Its been growing very well for three years like this.

Hi, I have a washington orange tree(dwarf)about 4 feet tall in my backyard and i noticed that half of the branches were dying. It was healthy for a year and all of the sudden this things happened started 2 months ago. Most of the leaves turns yellow and small branches turns to brown. New fruits about 10 mm in size were falling. I watered my tree almost every other day. Applied citrus fertilizer and still not working. How could i keep my tree healthy? Thank you so much.

Hi, I live in Saigon where it is hot and humid. I have a kumquat tree in a pot on my balcony which I got at the end of June last year. It arrived in a black plastic sack and looked a bit sorry. I planted it in a largeish pot with fresh compost and it responded by growing loads of new leaves, and after a couple of months it was covered in flowers which filled the balcony with lovely scent. Then came the fruit. About six weeks ago the leaves turned yellow and a few dropped. The leaves have white/grey flecks, which are a leaf coloration and not mites or anything like that. About two weeks ago it started to flower again and now we have what looks like a sick tree with both flowers and fruit on it. I have attached a link to a pic of the leaf coloration (its in my drop box). Can anyone please advise how to make my tree healthy again? Ugh. I hate that. My orange tree has dropped all its fruit the past 2 years (just bought the tree 2 years ago). So disappointing. Did the pomegranate flower but not set fruit? If so, maybe the female flowers simply were not pollinated. That's what happened to me last year (first year growing them). By the time I figured it out, I was able to hand pollinate three of them. This year I hand polinated a bunch, but also watched a couple and saw one that pollinated on its own. If you can't tell the difference between male and female, the female flowers are bigger and more swolen at the base. Inside the flower, there is the "female part" (for lack of knowledge of the proper term) sticking out in the center. Once you figure out which is which, they are easy to recognize. And I think it is all male at first, and even when the females start forming, they are greatly out numbered. You can hand polinate them with a soft paintbrush.

Ben, do you keep your roses soaked at all times? Oh, will roses thrive in CA? Sorry, I know this is a stupid question, but I've never seen a picture where roses are growing in CA now that I think about it.. Msjam, do you not have another area in the garden where you can plant your citrus? Somewhere that gets good light? This summer I've talked to a few ppl who live in TX and they said, because of the heat they were outside hosing down their citrus daily, otherwise the poor plants would have died. You know, underwatering can cause leaf drop. Is it possible they're dropping because they need acclimating?? Toni
