Hi all; I inherited my mother's night-blooming cereus, which was my grandmother's before that. It's bloomed the last 2 years, but no buds yet this year. However, the horrendous winter, lingering cold and late spring here in the NE meant that it didn't come out site until mode June or later. Still checking every day. Sigh. It does have some new leaves, which appear as tiny red leaves growing off the edge of an existing leaf - which is similar to the way it buds, but so far they all look like tiny red leaves wit yellow tips. I've been lightly feeding it with a very dilute solution of a water-sol fertilizer, 10-30-20 (dilute as those numbers seemed high.) Should I bump up the fertilizer? Or leave it alone? So, two questions: 1) Looks very healthy (besides the non-budding) but It does has some old leaves which have turned yellow or weirdly pink. Wondering if its ok ago trim them off..? And - 1) Is possible that the small new red leaves, growing from the margin of a green leaf, are the beginning of a bud? TIA. I do love this gangly plant, both for reminding me of my grandma's sunporch, and for its weird beauty.

the roots coming out of the plant are eithe one or two things......... epis like to climb on trees and such, so they could be sending out the roots to attach onto something....... or b they could be thirsty............ most succulents send out some form of ariel root when they are thirsty, those roots suck out the water from the atmosphere.......... yo cant make a cutting of it... in fact, i just did with mine....... hope this helps...

Hi, I have a big Epiphyllum oxypetalum in a hanging basket in my New York City apartment. It is doing great and blooms most years (it has one big bud now). In the last couple of years, in addition to its regular leaf-like branches, it has sent out a lot of very long, thin stringy branches fringed with a lot of air roots. They are really long and tangled and occasionally poke me in the eye. Two questions: I'm wondering if it's ok to cut off some of these to get the plant a little under control. I am putting the pot into a bigger basket and I've discovered that one bit of root has grown through and into the old basket, so I may have to cut it to make the transfer. Is that OK? I know orchids don't mind having some roots trimmed back, but I don't know about cereus. I love this plant - it couldn't be easier to take care of. Incidentally, I have a ton of cuttings--bits that broke off and are rooted in water and ready for potting. I also have a couple of little ones in pots. I'd be happy to give some of these to anyone in the NYC area who wants them.

This one however produces a fruit called a dragon Fruit because the fruits have scales. http://logees.com/prodinfo.asp?number=R2120-2 Both are night blooming and both Highly fragrant!
