Night blooming cereus has rootlets, is this normal?

I did a search and came up with nothing...it appears that there are aerial rootlets on the ends of an older leaf. Does this mean I could make a cutting of it? So strange, I mean I know they are epi's and all that, but is it stressed or something? Weird!

the roots coming out of the plant are eithe one or two things......... epis like to climb on trees and such, so they could be sending out the roots to attach onto something....... or b they could be thirsty............ most succulents send out some form of ariel root when they are thirsty, those roots suck out the water from the atmosphere.......... yo cant make a cutting of it... in fact, i just did with mine....... hope this helps...

I never paid them any mind when I grew them, but always assumed those aerial roots were for climbing.

I have 2 cuttings with lots of roots, easy to do with cereus, that I'd like to trade. I don't know what specific kind of cereus it is other than it has large snowy white blooms. I got my start from someone who got his the same way and wasn't interested in the specifics of names. They are each 8 inch stems; one has 2 5 inch leaves and the other's largest leaf is 8 inches. I'd be interested in other succulents that I wouldn't find at my local Lowes. I ship in boxes, priority and only trade with those who do the same.

there are two types of "grow lights" that fit into standard fixtures. One is a CFL and its coiled. The other is a blue tinted incandescent light. The former is far better them the latter. 60 watt *equivelant* CFLs actually only use 18 watts and don't make that much light. I would reccomend at least a 40 watt bulb that has an equiveancy of 100 watts. Moving the plants from under lights into direct sun probably caused your problems. Either leave them under lights, get more wattage, and leave the lights on for about 16 hours per day; or leave it outside in shade for a day or two, then a little brighter, until finally it gets a few hours of direct morning sun and bright indirect light the rest of the day. Plants have to build up a tan to protect themselves from the sun just like people do. GW doesn't host pictures themselves. you need to go to a hosting site like photobucket, and then post a picture directly to the post, or a linbk to the picture. Good Luck Bob

bunnygurl, your right it is a epie, it doesn't look like a Oxypetallum night blooming cereus, oxy leaves are flat and wide, this looks more like it could be a Strictum (Hookeri) that all so blooms at night and has white flowers, here a pic of one of my night blooming cereus the leaves are wide and flat. caring for a strictum is the same as for any other epie, good light, water only when dry and feed once a month. That looks like oxypetulauim. I grow strictum,but I have a cutting like yours.My strictuim is self fertilie,I don't recall if yours is or not.i'm on my new PC,but I have photos in my member page of mine blooming. I timed mine this year and had my bloom open over a 20 minute period. seedpod flower Bud bud opening(can see 2 in picture) plant shot I traded some this summer and got me some colors and some day bloomers.Then bought a few rhips and have a string of pearls,string of bananas (that both have bloomed)lucked out getting some dragon fruit cuttings too.I know you can cross your epi with other epis. my carion flower was in bloom when the pod took also.

Thanks for the info! I have started watering it again since it's been getting light out more and it's warming up. I also misted the leaves a few times already too. I'll try to get a cutting from it, two is always better than one! Maybe I should try to get it to climb on a support or something.

sounds like your cereus is telling you to water it more, its the growing season for them and they will drink lots of water, all mine are starting to put out new shoots and need more warter as it warms up.
