Can you post a picture? How much sun does it get? Are the small portions discolored and mushy? How cold is cold? Without knowing anything else, what stands out to me is that 1. watering hasn't changed and 2. its in a new environment. Perhaps watering *should* change. I can try to post a picture once I take one and figure out how to post it. Also, when I can, I have it in a very bright window. But since I have moved I have it under a grow light that is on for roughly 8 hours every day. The house is normally around 73 F but because of the move, it was very briefly out in cooler weather but only for a few minutes. I have now put it in my bedroom with is slightly warmer than 73. I have removed most of the affected leaves but still have a few on so I can take a picture of them. The long "stems" are not affected and continue to grow and produce smaller shoots.

What kind of grow light, what wattage, how far is the light from the top of the plant. In my humble opinion 8 hours per day is not nearly enough unless you have a very very bright light. I don't think a slight dip in temp for such a short amount of time would cause problems. I suspect it needs more light... Bob

I'm not sure what kind of grow light it is but it fits into a typical lamp and it is a 60W. The top of my plant is growing in the light, well the long shoots are, the top leaf is probably only 5 inches away and the light is shining down on it. When it gets warmer outside in the evenings I will move it outside. Should it be in a place with all day, direct sun, or an area that gets bright but indirect light? My mother thought she had done the damage when she moved it outside for the day into direct sunlight. She thought maybe it was sunburn from being inside under the grow light then out under the hot sun. She only told me she did this yesterday. Could that have caused it? Because I have noticed this withered look on my scilla too and it was moved from the grow light into the sunlight for a day. And I have photos but don't know how to post them.

there are two types of "grow lights" that fit into standard fixtures. One is a CFL and its coiled. The other is a blue tinted incandescent light. The former is far better them the latter. 60 watt *equivelant* CFLs actually only use 18 watts and don't make that much light. I would reccomend at least a 40 watt bulb that has an equiveancy of 100 watts.

Moving the plants from under lights into direct sun probably caused your problems. Either leave them under lights, get more wattage, and leave the lights on for about 16 hours per day; or leave it outside in shade for a day or two, then a little brighter, until finally it gets a few hours of direct morning sun and bright indirect light the rest of the day. Plants have to build up a tan to protect themselves from the sun just like people do.

GW doesn't host pictures themselves. you need to go to a hosting site like photobucket, and then post a picture directly to the post, or a linbk to the picture.

There are two ways you can post pictures - one is to get a Photobucket account and use that to post pictures on any of the forums on Gardenweb. The other is to just use the "Cactus Gallery," which is listed immediately beneath the "Cacti & Succulents" forum in the list of garden forums. The Cactus Gallery allows you to upload pictures straight from your computer. There are instructions for posting images on the Cactus Gallery, but below are the two primary things you should know -

*Image files may not be larger than 60 kilobytes.
*Images must be either in GIF or JPEG format and have one of the following file extensions: .gif, .jpeg or .jpg

The withering leaves have almost completely stopped occuring now that I have kept it under the grow light (it was just a regular blue incandescent grow light bulb) for longer periods of time. Now that the warmer weather has arrived (I hope), I will move it outside, as you suggested, into a sheltered location and will gradually bring it into the light. Thank you so much for your advice, I would be so upset if I had lost it!

Excellent! I'm glad you've decided to move it outside. On top of that, the blue incandescent "grow lights" aren't actually grow lights. In fact, if you have the packaging, I'd bet it says "plant light". They are for shining on plants to show them, more like a spotlight. They are far too hot, too weak, and give off the wrong wavelengths of light for strong plant growth. Best of Luck. Bob
