I live in Romania, here the winter is cold. Latitude 45.
Now, all its needles are brown or yellow. There is nothing green on it. And all its needles are falling.

I tried to add fertilizer for conifers. Nothing changed.

this February was very hard in Europe and a lot of sensitive plants died. When you have very deep temperatures Cedrus deodara becomes brown needles. But if it has lost the needles and the plant is still alive then it will have new grow from a lot of buds.

Please wait some weeks and hope the plant will become new needles.

If you live in Europe, maybe in Germany (after your name), you know how are the winters here. And you know probably that now all trees are full of buds. But my cedar doesn't seem to have yet.

Do you think it will be necessary some fertilizers ? Or the soil must be changed ? Or something else ? Or just patience ?

From my experience you only need patience. But I do not use fertilizer,so I have no experience. The soil must not be changed.

I saw your pic from February. But I think the Cedrus is still alive and I think you will soon see new neddles growing from some buds.

It was a terrible winter also here in Germany, where I live. You are right. We had much damage. The problem was, it was very mild till the end of January and suddenly from one day to the other we had -18C/-20C deep temperatures with sharp East wind. This was terrible for a lot of plants.

Good luck and let us know how your pretty Cedrus will look like in summer. I think it will survive.

I have a garden with medicinal herbs, and my Cedrus was like a king in the midst of them. I hope it will become again the king of my garden.

Wolfgang is right, also in The Netherlands we had a very cold February with -20 degrees Celcius while January was very mild with +12 degrees Celcius.

Also a lot of Cedrus deodara cultivars at my nursery dropped a lot of needles but they're recovering now because all their buds are starting to swell.

Nun, what temperatures do you've today in Romenia?
If your Cedrus is ok then it's buds also must start to swell by now...

I wouldn't be so worry if its buds would starting to swell.

Now, the temperatures in Romania are 20 degrees Celsius (maximum) in the daytime, and 10 degrees (minimum) in the night.

I just talked on the phone with a nursery man from Romania, who told me all the needles of cedars from the gardens he take care of are now brown. Some of them are already starting to recover, some not. He also told me to have patience, because it's still cold in the night.

I live in a convent far away from town, and I think maybe temperatures are still too low for my cedar.

Yes isidora, please wait until June. I waited till June for a Dawn Redwood tree one time and then all of a sudden all the buds grew.

My convent is near Bucharest (60 km south from it) and I'm in the hardiness zone 6a. Of course, I will wait and when I'll have good news, I'll come here to share with all of you.

I make photos from time to time, to see the progress of my garden, I'm just an amateur, but the Cedrus itself will be enough to be a fine picture.

As an aside, if it does recover and grow well, in a few years, you won't have a herb garden any more, just a carpet of heavily shaded old cedar needles ;-)

I'm not afraid. Maybe in ten years, it will be so big, although I know it grows on vertical.

Anyway, in ten years, I will be too old to gardening, and can stay at its shadow to rest.

A old Cedrus without needles will not give you much shade...:0)

Romania gets bursts of Siberian cold air during winter that I'm afraid will kill your average Cedrus. Sounds like this tree is dead or will die in the next few winters.

Your only hope is to have someone collect seeds of Cedrus libani ssp. stenocoma (Turkish Cedar) from the highest peaks of the Taurus mountains, which are also exposed to cold air from Siberia, and which should do fine in Romania's winters. Theoretically you can also find cold-hardy Cedrus deodara growing on the highest peaks of Afghanistan and Kashmir (Cedrus deodara 'Eisregen', Cedrus deodara 'Shalimar', Cedrus deodara 'Karl Fuchs' are some of the varieties people have already been proagated).

There are huge differences in cold hardiness between cedars at lower elevations and higher elevations, even if they are the same species. Check out the following article on the topic:

I agree with bluecone. If you loose your Cedrus ( what we do not hope), then plant one of the cultivars he told you.The blue-needled cultivars are very hardy and have no problems with deep temperatures and cold wind.

Not all blue needled Cedrus cultivars are good winterhardy.
The best one's are:
Cedrus deodara 'Eisregen'
Cedrus deodara 'Karl Fuchs'
Cedrus deodara 'Polar Winter'
Cedrus libani ssp. stenocoma
These blue forms are availlable in Romenia, I recently exported some to that country...

I live in south Romania, near the border with Bulgaria, so I have here the mildest temperatures possible from my country. Here I'm in the Danube river alluvial plain, therefore, at a low elevation.

I bought this Cedrus from Hornbach store, maybe you know it.

Don't they import adapted species to my country ? I kept the instructions from the store, they say this Cedrus resists until -20 degrees Celsius. Last winter we didn't have that temperature. I checked: in my zone, the lowest temperature was -13-14 degrees.

If I'd go on the conifers market in Romania and I'd like to buy some special Cedrus, I'll pay a stiff price.

If you exported those blue forms in my country, where do you think I will find your cultivars ? In case I loose my Cedrus.

You can try to become these at Nicoresti in Galat.
He's living at the East side of Romenia near the Moldova border.
