Picea glauca 'Corulea'

Picea glauca 'Corulea' (not the blue 'Coerulea') was a last minute impluse buy at Gee's. Does anyone have any experience with this tree? Thought I'd research it when we got home but information online seems nonexistent. I contacted Gee's and was told upright, 8' x 4-5', slow growing, not dense like most spruces but not spindly either - actually a lot of information. But should 'Corulea' be used as a background tree, a specimen, or given away to someone who takes anything green?

Also spent hours at Hidden Lakes Arboretum. Thank you, Ken, for that recommendation! Definitely will go back.

In addition to 'Corulea' bought:

Abies alba 'Green Spiral' (nicknamed Dax's plant)

Abies balsamea 'Piccolo'

Abies koreana 'Silberperl'

Picea abies 'Little Gem' (widely available but cute)

Picea abies 'Pusch'

Pinus parviflora 'Fukusumi'

Picea pungens 'Mrs. Cesarini'

Pinus strobus 'Kruger's Liliput'

Tsuga canadensis 'Kelsey's Weeping'

I have no experience with the Abies genus. Any advice on these three?

i had a feeling some conifer-ite was within 10 miles of my house...
sometimes gee's labels have some unique spellings.. lol ..... perhaps phonetic ....

i have Picea glauca 'Caerulea'

but it is the steel blue one..

can post pix if you wish ...

i wouldnt be surprised if joy pops in and corrects your spelling ... i mean gees spelling

Hi Ken,

If the tree was any shade of blue, I'd think it was a spelling error, too. It's a medium dark green with the new growth being vivid red (not Picea abies 'Rubraspicata'). The red caused the 'impulse' buy. It's about eighteen inches high and I picked it out of their hoop house. Is it possible that the blue will develop in the sun? Does your tree have red tips in the spring? I really need to invest in a camera!

Ten miles from Gee's? Wow, I'd be over there weekly.

Snake is the very best of the snakespruces I've seen. The glaucous blue is striking as the form is too. Not so weirdly wild. The biggest I've seen is a 10 footer or so though. Very symmetrical however. Picea eng. You probably need to show good shots of the mature needles for anyone to come up with reasonably certain determinations of the species. Otherwise this example has the habit of a typical species and is not a weeping horticultural selection - most of those are much more pendent. If there was an aberrant-looking, second stem present at time of planting - and you had some specific reason to believe you were being given a weeping form at the time - probably what happened is that the horizontal section was the weeping scion and what you are growing now is a seedling that the named form was grafted onto. Just maybe even a hybrid seedling - raised from seed gathered in a cultivated setting, where more than one spruce species was present - that won't fit perfectly within the morphological parameters of a pure species.

Ok...understood Ken! I live in Southern NJ zone 7a I believe. I am looking for a blue spruce which would be planted to one side of a sidewalk which wraps around to my back yard. It will be in full sun at that location. My soil is marl, so drainage is not optimal, however the full sun load keeps the soil dry in that location. The space I have in mind would be about a 5 foot diameter. I love the look of the pictured trees, so that is what I am going for. The trees in the picture have been at that site for 5 years. They were about 3-4 feet when planted, and now are my height about 5 feet. No one at local nurseries is giving me anything to go on, but rather trying to get me to buy a Baby Blue and call it a day. I know they get to 15-30 feet despite the fact that they tell me they will not go beyond 8-10 feet. I just want a petite little conifer with a big pop of color! Since the local nurseries are trying to sell what they have, I thought I would turn to you all and get the appropriate direction. I would hate to put in a tree only to have to rip it out in several years.

@maackia The 'something' has to be read in the narrowing context of the discussion, e.g. as the 3 synonyms in the RHS link. Definition of 'structural'? I have also seen 'architectural' and other adjectives that I can't remember. The meaning of such words/labels depends 90% on context. You know how the foliage of Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Nana Gracilis' looks like. FWIW, I have at present co-planted my (high grafted) Picea pungens 'Something' with a (low grafted) Abies balsamea 'Nana' and a (rooted cutting) Juniperus squamata 'Blue Star' in the same, raised garden bed. The latter is marginally hardy where I am, and I am looking for a replacement if it gets severe winter damage or dies. (Actually, I will add a small co-plant and let nature take its course. Who knows, the 'Blue Star' may survive for a long, long time) Edit: Abies balsamea 'Nana' seems to have synonyms, too, LOL. Regardless of naming, I like them all :-)

Yep Ken, you're right, I saw some Gee's spelling which are wrongly written:
Pinus parviflora 'Fukuzumi' must be written as 'Fuku-zu-mi'.

Pinus strobus 'Kruger's Lilliput' must be written as 'KrÃ¼ger's Lilliput'.

I never heard about a Picea glauca 'Corulea' which cultivarname is alsmost the same as 'Coerulea'.
Maybe a mislabeling took place.
Please show us a photo of this conifer and maybe then we can help you out.

You bought some beautiful plants Kathy. I mean that. Firs grow great in Illinois. They may require a bit better drainage than other conifers, but they do very well. ...nice job on the Silberperle, Piccolo, Pusch, and really all of them.

I'm impressed...

Coniferjoy, thanks for the corrections...I'm learning :-)...and I do need a camera.

Ken, the spring flowers are starting to bloom at Hidden Lakes. We were one to two weeks too early to see the lower field break out in it's glory. I'm thinking my 'Corulea' (regardless of spelling) is a totally different plant from yours. I'm classifying it as an experiment!

Dax, thank you so much for the compliment! Should I confess that yesterday I picked up a Picea glauca 'Rainbow's End' (too good of a price to pass up), a Picea orientalis 'Skylands' (our second, but it had the tiniest red cones), a Tsuga canadensis 'Cole's Prostate' (finally have the partial shade to start a collection of Tsugas), a Chamaecyparis pisifera 'White Pygmy', and a Pinus contorta 'Taylor's Sunburst' (I was hesitant about this one but once we got it home, it just seems to glow).

This forum gets credit for the success of our first 'Skylands'. As discussed on the forum, we gave it a burlap screen for it's first two years. This is the third year, so the screen goes to the new 'Skylands'.

Now, if it would just dry up a little...lot, I could turn on the outside speakers, grab my shovel, and get started!

The Tsuga canadensis 'Cole's Prostate' is now 'Cole' aka 'Cole's ProstRate'.
