Well Ken, I got'em posted, lol; I 1st started out w/ 18" trees on the fenceline, 2-3yrs ago but they all died too much water cause the soil is to soggy after rain & snow storms. Had the trench but in 4"drainpipe w/peagravel and had the same landscaper dig & put in the trees after the drench was done, made a Big deal! The small ones bent over ARE A FEW YRS OLD dont have support may need a stick but will they live with brown tips? No, on the lawn spraying svc, wouldnt even use fertilizer til I can get these trees going. Botany shop is where I purchased all of them (1st the little ones; they failed then plan B larger one w/ the trench) last yr online, sent botany shop pics also warranty is 1yr so Im looking to get the brown ones replaced, the yellow tipped one is I dont know on. I'll have to cut back some grass from the trunk. Thanks whole bunch for your help Ken

Can anyone tell me why the ends of some branches are drying up and turning red on this Thuja? I live near Tucson, Az. zone 9a, and the temperature is between 95 and 105F in the afternoons, but I water it using a soaker hose for 2 hours every second or third night when my finger, moisture meter and wooden dowel agree it's almost dry. It hasn't rained here since I planted the tree on May 8 at 3' tall. I really don't want to lose this tree, it was shipped from Oklahoma. It has never been fertilized. Could it be too much/little water or too intense sun for 10 hours a day? The red tips make me wonder about too much sun. (I planted a 38" Saguaro cactus in March and had to put a net over it because it was getting black bloches from sunburn.) The branch on the left has red tips and came from halfway up the tree. The branch on the right was completely dried out near the bottom of the tree. There is mulch around the tree if the prairie dogs don't dig it up to keep cool after watering! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

there is normal winter bronzing on my GG... up here in the great white north .... i am presuming that is not what you are talking about.. a picture would sure help define such ... but.. with evergreens.. as the name implies.. they are always green .. and i swear.. even for a period after they are dead.. up here.. that can be nearly a year ... if yours definitely are showing a TOTAL dulling .. you can just tell they are 'off' .. then i would suggest they are not long for this world.. if not already dead ... and they may stay sickly looking.. until the heat returns next spring/summer.. when they will finally turn all brown ... if you are saying.. there is sporadic brown spots.. we need a picture ... check out the link ... only time will tell ... but presume the worst.. if in fact they are dead.. or near dead... then the manure will not do anything.. and in fact.. may hasten it all ... i appreciate your searching for old posts.. but this topic would have been better served in anew post.. with its own searchable title.. because it has to do with potential death. rather than this topic title.. of just planted... regardless.. post wherever it makes you happy ... good luck oh.. That does look quite burnt. I've bored everybody here with my stories re: GG's up in Z4, but since it appears to relate to your situation, I will recount: Planted a handful up at my tree farm place, one year three nice bigger ones-maybe 3 ft. tall at planting, and then a few years later, another three or four. The first group were up in a wind-swept fiied that I am well into the process of re-foresting. The others were down in a swamp. All looked good to great for the first four years or so. Then we had the extreme cold of last winter. The ones in the more sheltered swampy location, which had been growing by leaps and bounds, fried to a crispy brown. So did the ones up top in the field. Those ones though, did re-green right at their tips. The lower-ground ones did not. All are waiting for my saw. I've got no use for something so borderline in that climate. Should also add, my woods is composed primarily of Thuja occidentalis-the actual species. They have their normal winter coloration, but always bounce back like nothing happened. So, even though you're quite far to my south, it looks like this plant is not a good choice for you. I feel bad for you as you had obviously invested a great deal more in the GG's than did I. Finally, as bad as they look-and they do look bad-why not leave them be. They could bounce back more than it seems, although at that point, I'm sure you'd be thinking more or less what I'm thinking-what good are they if this is going to happen? Good luck, and maybe check out the T. occidentalis cultivar 'Hetz Wintergreen'. A very handsome plant which grows quickly and is far less inclined to discolor in winter. +oM
