Any roses that do particularly well in part shade? Any Austins?
Comments (22)Heritage, Pretty Jessica, Lady of Shallot, Wollerton Old Hall, and Jude the Obscure are my Austin's that are doing well (growing, blooming and disease resistant although WOH and Jude do get a little BS in my no spray garden) in partial shade although I am sure they would bloom more with more sun. I do think the blooms of these paler of these roses might fry in summer if they actually had more sun. I am also going to get Teasing Georgia for its supposed shade tolerance and did consider Grace for the same reason. I have heard on this forum that Olivia Rose and Ambridge rose do well in part shade....See MoreConifers in shade?? (i.e., north side of house)
Comments (7)There are a few that require shade, like Cryptomeria j. 'Knaptonensis' (Google it - it's quite pretty but it's a smaller variety). Cryptomeria j. 'Sekkan Sugi' can also take shade and gets large - 35' or so at maturity. Both of these have very light-colored new growth which is striking against the older, darker green. Concur that local advice good to secure at this point. Both of these are lovely plants and I think you would find them interesting. They also work well with Japanese maples and other non-conifers for a diverse and satisfying shade garden. Have fun with it! Comments (56)* The mantle of Mrs. Grundy - a figurative name for an extremely conventional person who worries about being different * The Grand Guignol - a Parisian theater that opened in 1897 * The "qui vive" of expectation - Que vive? Is a question: Who goes there? To be on the alert, suspicious. * Carlyle on the Dutch (who was who and who did what?) - Carlyle was Scottish writer/philosopher in nineteenth century who wrote social/political criticism. Not sure about the Dutch reference. Any ideas? * Cassandra could have looked more gloomily prophetic - Cassandra was the royal daughter at the time of the Trojan War. She rejected ApolloâÂÂs advances and in retaliation, he made it so no one would believe what she said. (Perhaps âÂÂgloomily prophecticâ due to this?) * A veritable colossus of negation - âÂÂcolossusâ was a huge ancient statue on the Greek island of Rhodes, so perhaps this refers to how immovable negativity is when people espouse it strongly * Fox (re: pity?) - not sure about this one. * Bib and tucker (clothing) - refers to oneâÂÂs best clothes; first used in 18th century. âÂÂBibsâ were similar to current day baby bibs, except these were worn by adults over their clothes (mostly women). Made of lace and fitted over the bodice; sometimes called âÂÂpinnersâ or âÂÂmodesty piecesâÂÂ. âÂÂTuckerâ were bibs that were tucked in. (Pinners/Bibs were pinned and tuckers were tucked.) Linked with âÂÂpinaforeâÂÂ, âÂÂpin-a-foreâÂÂ: a pin/bib thatâÂÂs pinned on the front of clothing. (Taken from Patricia Brent, Spinster - Herbert Jenkins.)...See MoreI have a color dilemma. Comments (8)Patricia, First, under this 77 inch TV there will be a linear fireplace the exact length of TV. So the TV is as low as it can be. As the Fireplace will be only 8 inches off the floor and is 18 inches in height. So this give me approximately 6 inches of space between TV and FP. As far as the cabinets are concerned, yes they are add ons but they will be tied into the whole unit with matching crown moldings and painted a color that I had hoped would be appropriately recommended here. As I stated, We are near the beach in a beach town and wanted bright coastal colors especially where the back of this livingroom is not that bright with natural light the way it is now and we thought that a white washed distressed plank wall would add to the coastal motif. My question or concern was the colors for the cabinets and the color for the walls on each side of the cabinets and the media center itself. Though you gave your critical opinion which I can appreciate, I really didn’t see any constructive opinions or recommendations. Thank you though....See Morepicea
