Buying to breed a deep red or Pink

Ok, I have wanted to do this for a while. I really do not want to do it if someone knows it is doomed. I was going to buy Emily McKenzie, Harlot and Vixen and always breed back for color and hardiness. Anyone know if these would like it real hot and humid? Are they real picky plants? Is there a better plant to use for breeding?

What if you used a Mountain Magic for the color?

I have one sole plant that I bought. It wasn't doing well inside here - now it's under grow lights and warmer temperatures - it's growing pretty well again.

Seems real slow though compared to the others.

But what if you used that one for the dark color?

Jim, if you can find pollen to work with you could save yourself allot of time. I know BGI has a pollen bank, not sure about ABADS. Right now there are 15 available vials of Mountain Magic in the BGI bank. Just a thought. As a member you can get 4 pollens every 3 months.

There are a few other new pink lilacs now, one is growing in a yard the other way from me, doesn't look like Isabella. I think the James MacFarlane is pink, but they don't always necessarily bloom true. I bought some and planted them on the farm, can't remember the names now except for Sensation. They all died but the yellow one because I couldn't be there to get them off to a good start. The yellow one is pretty pale but pretty anyway. There is an oriental yellow one that is more showy in Klehm's catalog. That other link was a fascinating read. Nothing about propagation, but what a contribution she made. I think I stumbled onto a page of that site before. What a lady! Makes me regret I couldn't have had the foresight to get started in my better years. Wow, too bad it's an Australian site (can't order from them probably) and too bad I don't have more room for them. We have a beautiful public lilac garden a block away, but there are newer, more exotic ones out there now compared to what they put in about 30 years ago. Still, it is a lovely place. That is definitely peachy in the bud form, then it looks like it opens to a more pink shade. Beautiful thing. You are finding some neat sites on the web.

Best Red/Dark Pink Penstemon

You've given me a great opportunity to talk about my favorite Penstemon by far, and I've tried quite a few Penstemon. Penstemon 'Sour Grapes' has a large fairly dark reddish purple flower, more red than purple, with a splash of white in its throat. It's not as showy as many with their large white throat patches like Bev Jensen, for example, but I like it much better. I tire of those with big patches of white. It is also not a color that you might instantly fall in love with, but, amazingly, I haven't found a color yet that it doesn't go with. From the pure reds and yellows and pinks and purples to the autumnal colors of Heleniums, it doesn't seem to matter. It has very attractive deep burgundy red stems and medium to deep green leaves. It gets a little over 2' tall and maintains a more narrow habit than is typical. It has other great garden attributes: It keeps to itself by being rigidly upright and it puts its growing efforts into making flowers, not growing an excess of foliage.. No lax stems that root as they touch ground or octopus arms that overwhelm its neighbors. Nor does it expand rapidly at its base. It seems to live for a long time. Does it have any problems? Only one: finding it! There are at least three Penstemons named Sour Grapes in commerce. One is a pale white with pink edges. Another is a Blue Violet. I've never grown the pale one, but the red Violet one is an octopus sort of Penstemon, a type that I've grown to loathe. I got this wrong Sour Grapes in error. I used to readily find Sour Grapes at my local nurseries. Some six or seven years ago, when it was out of stock at my usual nursery, I ordered it. It came in in 4" pots and I planted them out, but when it bloomed it was obviously not "my" Sour Grapes. I later discovered it came from Monrovia. Perhaps a big grower like Monrovia has overwhelmed the market? I don't know. All I know is that I've struggled to find more. I did this summer order from the one on line resource I could find that advertised Sour Grapes and I ordered one, and though it has yet to bloom, it is clearly one of the octopus sorts and not "my" Sour Grapes. I did finally find it at a nursery that doesn't do mail order and made the three hour round trip drive to buy all nine they had in 4" pots. I now feel safe that I won't ever run out of them again. It would be a terrible shame if this great Penstemon were lost to commerce and I wish I knew what to do about it.

Thanks, tmac and bellarosa! tmac, I have been out of town for the last few days, and I just came back home. On my way back from the airport, I stopped by Lowe's and found the 1 gallon pot of F&E RED! I thought that I must come and post this for you, only to see this post! I guess Lowe's has a better deal then, at $14.99! However, I was hoping to get a larger plant though... sigh... let me wait a little bit... bellarosa - please post a pic! I am dying to see that red bloom!

Hi Penguu. Let me see, if I can help you a little bit. "I bought this mini from a garden center today, and it wasn't labeled with a name." That is probably, because it has no name. 90% of the mini roses sold in garden centers and building supply stores are unnamed, greenhouse orphans, with no accurate parental records. The wholesale producers find it easier to label their minis with 'generic titles', like "Red, White, Pink or Yellow This or That". That would include all of the 'Parade' and 'Minimo' roses. Those are just convenient names to put on a label. Then, any red mini that is produced by the wholesaler can wear the same tag, based on color only. This creates problems for anyone researching the rose. You don't get a clue as to what it will become. You may even buy several roses with the same name on the label, and each of them could be totally different in growth habit, disease resistance, form and even color. All reds are not the same, but tell that to the wholesalers! Your photos of the stems and foliage are typical of all greenhouse grown minis. Once your roses are planted outside in the sun, they will produce all new foliage that will probably be darker, shinier and not so tender looking. In other words, the future foliage will be normal mini foliage. Don't panic, if all of that soft, matte, greenhouse foliage drops off in the next week or two. You will get more, if you just get your rose in the ground or a large, well-drained pot IN THE SUN...OUTDOORS! Mini roses are NOT HOUSEPLANTS. The size of your plant is also typical for a wholesale plant, but the final size of the bush is still unknown. It could become anywhere from knee high to waist high or larger, if grown properly. You do have a red rose, but the final shade of that color may be quite different. Again, those blooms are not true to the variety, because the blooms were produced in greenhouse. You will get to know your a 'new rose', when the blooms are produced on your OUTDOOR PLANT. The flowers will probably be bigger and have more petals as well. You may even discover that your rose has fragrance, once it get to grow in the sun. Sorry, but those thorns will most likely get VERY RIGID and increase in number on the canes that come in the future. Those are the typical, soft thorns of a greenhouse rose. Don't be so sure that the "Flowers don't bloom in clusters." That is a small starter plant, not a mature bush. Most mini roses in the small, wholesale pots do not produce sprays. There just isn't enough soil to support the growth of the strong stems needed for sprays. Again, time in the sun will tell the truth about that charactertic. The other thing that you can't judge from that greenhouse rose is disease resistance. All greenhouse roses should be free of obvious diseases, like mildew and rust. Yes, they are sprayed in the greenhouses (though usually not in stores for health of the customers and sales staff). However, the main reason that your plant is disease-free is even more understandable. It has been in the 'sanitary, fungus-free environment of the greenhouse all of its life. Wait 'til Mother Nature get her hands on your baby, before assuming it's disease resistance. How do I know all of this and can speak so confidently on this topic? I have 35+ years of growing mini roses, as both an amateur grower and owner of a well-known mini rose nursery. Our nursery grew minis from cuttings to finish product totally OUTDOORS; but occasionally, we would get some greenhouse stock of new varieties from a other growers. Then, we would have to nurse these plants through the shock of life outside the 'womb of the greenhouse'. Growing all the roses outdoors gave us the advantage of knowing exactly the true characteristic of all of the roses. My advise is simple. Enjoy your new rose; call it whatever you want; and grow it like a big rose...outdoors, in the ground and in the sun.

Jim, good luck with whatever you're doing. I am also looking for a deep pendent pink that is vigorous, grows like a weed, and does not mind hot and humid nights.

Mine!! stay away!! I want to be the guy who gets a true red!! grrrrrrr! ;) :)

LOOK out for the new, near red ones from Germany, becoming available soon, I believe. Super Spot is one. I saw a picture next to a ripe tomato, and they matched! very nice, the reddest I have seen.

Anyway it was introduced about 2003 - so should be available soon.

I have three deep pink seedlings from Esmeraldas x MM cross- one is especially deep.

I will have pollen to share next summer.

I saw the German ones. Very pretty but would not like it here. Most brugs do not. MM is very pretty. I joined BGI as a Christmas present. I am not sure how to request pollen, yet. If I come up with one Barry you can have the credit I just want the flower. I saw one and I need to go back to the house it was in, a well they have a pit Bull at every other house. It was hidden in the shade. It was gorgeous and about 12' tall and flushing. It is about 30 miles away close to where I work. I met the owner before I knew he had a brug. the plants leading to the house were all exotic variegated plants. I think about this brug very often. I do believe I can find my way back.

Jim - if you cross a Charles G and a MM - what would the color be? Orange?

Just curious. Was wondering because there doesn't seem to be a large amount of "oranges" available here other than the picky crabby HG.

And wouldn't that one be really hardy?

Jim over a BGI they have the pollen bank set up just like the other areas ..you turn in your request and contact Mary same for seeds..

Can this pollen be frozen? Once I get it, how would I freeze it? And how long will it keep in the freezer? I have lots of hosta pollen stored/frozen but don't know if it (brug pollen) requires the same conditions.

Brenda, most folks I know store their pollen in microcentrifuge tubes in the freezer. Stored this way it should be good for a year or longer. Make sure the pollen is dry (if you are the one collecting) before it is placed in the tubes.

Thanks- I will order some. I have used the 00 size gel-caps for the hosta pollen after it is well dried, that are then sealed in freezer bags.

These little containers look like they will hold more pollen.

The 'tubes' are mostly what I store mine in. They are air tight/ and thus more moisture tight as well. Make sure your pollen is dry first or the pollen can rot. I let mine dry on folded paper in a dry place for at least a few days first. The air is much drier here than it was in Louisiana-sometimes it took longer there since there is so much moisture/humidity in the air...if you live in a humid area, a lamp will help with drying the pollen quicker.
Sometimes you can find the microcentrifuge tubes on ebay.

I found the link any ideas on crosses for the ladies Harlot, Vixen, Emily and Painted lady. MM is a go. I have used an item from Walmart it is called moisture absorber. I use it in the fridge in a sealed container. It is too humid here to try to dry anything outside of an sealed low humidity. I am so excited I have wanted them for a long time. Winter is the perfect time to start plants here.

Techno oranges hmmmm. I would think so. All we can do is try. I dearly love my CG he is blooming again.

Brenda, that is one beautiful Brug. I am dreaming of my ladies I am hooked. It is nice to dream. I have read so much about Emily the 2 sisters and then PL that I can plainly see them. I sure hope they like Texas. I am making a special place for them. I have tried pollination before but it never took. Maybe it is those 60 MPH cold fronts that moved through. I will try again in the spring and summer when it is calm.

I might have a handle on these HGs now. And RA is absolutely right about the humidity. They're in the room now that's beeing kept at 75 and I spray every morning. Not to mention - all the watering - humidity stays kinda high in there. Maybe they'll LOVE Illinois and our awful humidity!

I just MIGHT be able to make these go! Have 1 plant - and 3 cuttings. And believe it or not - get this - my HG cuttings have sprouts! Only one looks like it's gonna go bye bye.

The Whiskers don't look like they're gonna make it though. The flamencos were late but look like they're comin' on strong. And my species finally found their feet also!

A shame about the whiskers though. Eh - win some, ya lose some.

Oh - and Desiree looks like a gonner. Charles is guilty of murder - he strangled her. (grin) I'll stick it in a pot and see if it still survives.
