will the real maigold please stand up

What plant does stanley's have pictured for picea pungens maigold? The understanding i have is that maigold has green foliage. Is it maybe ghost or brotzman blue?

Other pictures show yellowish new growth. With "gold" in the name you would expect some yellow.

i was under the impression they were the same .. though i have no idea where that idea came from .. maybe a dream where i decided i didnt need another spring color pungens ....

i would hesitate to rely on book pix or online pix in comparing such coloration ..... camera and film and the siting of the plant can vary so wildly that i would want to see them growing in the same garden in the same soil.. in the same light.. before i would 'believe' that there are significant differences .... and before i would be willing to invest in both ....

maybe some dead braincell is thinking that van Hoey pictures baileys .. and somehow i came to believe that it is the same as spring ghost ... i will never know .. lol .. unless one of you read the same thing somewhere ....

I'm back at this again. So these do seem to be more Montana (zero pods on scapes) but then I have another one I happened upon (it was an unknown) that looks almost the same but deeper veins and loaded w/ pods. Could that be Ginba???

Ronny - I'm not a food critic, but I'd describe the big red ones as mild with a complex flavor, something like a cross between citrus, berries, and lovage. Quite tasty. I was actually thinking earlier that if I had to name them, it might be something like "Inca (I'm sure it's a cross) Loves (short for lovage) Fruit (citrus and berries)." I haven't had a chance to taste IRD yet, so no idea how close the flavors are. Brian - Thanks so much. I'm glad one is the IRD. I'm actually thinking of overwintering mine. At least I can be sure I wont be late getting it started next year. Lol.

Brad, thank you so much for the permission to use the images and also for the extra images. I am writing to the person I bought the plant from and if you agree I will share these images with him so that if he still has any of the plant left that he sold to me as Foxhaven Annie , he can do some searching and find out what it really is . Cup Plant is a common name for Silphium perfoliatum. Rosinweed is a common name used for several Silphium species (i.e. Prairie Rosinweed, Whole-leaf Rosinweed, Rough-stem Rosinweed, Starry Rosinweed). This is a good example of the confusion that can arise from using common names. As others have said, the second plant is Silphium perfoliatum (Cup Plant). The first plant looks more like Silphium asteriscus (Starry Rosinweed), to me, because the phyllaries are not closely appressed, and some are more pointed than typical of Silphium integrifolium.

Most posts come with an unwritten 'FWIW'.

I purchased a plant of 'Maigold' from Buchholz last year and the foliage is green like 'Golden feather' The plant Stanley has Pictures looks much more like 'Spring Ghost' or Brotzmans selection with blue foliage that pushed whitish new growth. David

Maigold means "May gold" (in German that's the month of May, not as in "may or may not". So at other times of year it may be green or any other colour.

In Swedish it translates to: Majguld. Whatever that means!
