need rose/clematis combos for zone 5

Hi,

I'm looking to plant some rose/clematis combos around a large metal gazebo. The gazebo has 6 sides. Each side is almost 7 feet wide. The diamter had the widest point is almost 14 feet. I'd like to plant at each junction point so I'm thinking of 6 clematis/rose combos. My goal is to grow enough vines to create shade for the table & chairs inside the gazebo.

I'm looking for recommendations of some good clematis/rose combos for zone 5. Climbing roses can be a challenge in this zone. My garden color scheme is pinks/blues/purples & whites so please no red or yellow. I do want to use the Sweet Autumn Clematis on one side. I know it needs to be by itself.

Ideas hugely appreciated! Thank you.

This summer I saw this when traveling. I believe the clematis are Jackmanii. I really loved the fact that they used only one kind.

Karen, typically the type II large flowering hybrids are more prone to wilt than any of the other types of clematis. Some have reported wilt on type III clematis and even some of the viticellas but I often wonder when people say they have wilt whether it is really the typical clematis wilt or something else that is mimicking the disease. As to which clematis are more resistant to clematis wilt, I recommend you visit the International Clematis Society Website linked below where they have the best clematis for beginners listed by category. There are several blue-purple clematis that will fill the bill for your situation including Polish Spirt, Blue Belle, Jackmanii, Etoile Violette, and others shown on the International Clematis Society webpage where they have pictures for many of the varieties they recommend. For others you are unsure of the color of, visit Clematis on the Web and search for the varieties because they have pictures for all the common varieties you are likely to find locally. You can also search for clematis by color and the descriptions will give you the final height in meters (one meter is equal to about 3.28 feet for your info). Their website is as follows: http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/index.html Although you are looking for taller types of clematis, if you are into purple (and I am unashamedly am), I think you should look into Petit Faucon. It is an integrifolia which does not cling by itself but can be tied in, will get about five feet or so in height (for me anyway) and blooms for me from late April well into September with sporadic blooms into October. Here's the website for North Creek Farm. Suzy Verrier is an expert on old roses that will grow in Maine, but as I recall also has some of the newer roses as well. I know that North Creek isn't close to you, but she does mail order. If you visit the website, the plants are listed under "Gardening Shed" which seemed an odd place to put them. Let me ask you what you mean by "take them in"? Are you going to plant them in the ground or in pots? If in the ground, I think you would do more damage by digging them up to take them in. Covering them with several inches of mulch should protect most of them pretty well. If you plan to plant them in pots, then you do need to do some planning for winter. You can either bring the pots into your unheated garage, or you can bury them (pot and all) in the ground to await next spring. There are plenty of discussions about these winter protection methods here on the site so you can get all the details. It is true that some minis are more winter tender than others, but if you do a good job of winter protection they should come through okay.

Yes, it's the same rose. The year I bought my two I think it was listed as 2.5 feet or something odd. HMF says 3-6 feet, but used to say only 3, I think. But funniest is HMF says Ascot grows up to 18 inches wide--mine is about 7 feet. It's a good thing I just happened to plant the one in the photo in a place with lots of room, but I have had to remove a lavender, dianthus, and will remove another big lavender this spring to make way. It's currently duking it out with a huge snowball bush. Who will win? Diane Ascot in 2013--see how far away the snowball is? The rose is touching it now. The lavender on the right is gone and other will soon be gone; it's being crushed.

I have New Dawn rose growing with C. Etoile Violette. New Dawn is a very pale pink and Etoile Violette makes it pop. New Dawn is absolutely hardy for me and needs no spraying.

I am also in zone 5 and the only climbing rose that has done well for me is New Dawn. The fresh-looking foliage keeps it from becoming a turnoff by late July and August. I have mine with Venosa Violacea and Huldine on one side of an arbor. I like it. I hope yours turns out!

For roses, you should check out the Canadian Explorer roses, which are very hardy. I have the following:

- William Baffin, fuschia, planted with clematis, Huldine. Here's a pic:

Loved your pictures. I have the perfect place for William Baffin on an arbor near clematis Alba Luxurians & opposite Venosa Violacea. I've seen the rose at a local nursery, but wasn't sure of the color. The bright fuschia color of WB looks perfect for the area. Now all I have to do is move a small evergreen shrub. LOL. Thanks for the idea!

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed my pics. Leslie, WB has a heavy flush in June and then blooms sparsely for the rest of the season. If you're looking for a fuschia climber that's hardy and has really good repeat bloom, try Capt. Samuel Holland. I don't have it, but have read that the rebloom is really good. Its also not as big as WB, which grows to around 10 feet. CSH grows to around 7 ft. Good luck!
