Clearance Bin Voodoo

I need to seriously stay away from the clearance bins at big-box garden centers! But what a coincidence that I was drooling over chaparralgirl's Carmel-By-the-Sea photos... especially the purple and green Aeonium... and then I see this poor miserable little guy...

banished to no-plants-land with 3 other already fully dead plants on the clearance cart at Lowes. Sound familiar? I just found a giant Gollum jade marked half off that I posted about a few weeks ago. My jade is doing SOOO much better thanks to the great advice from this forum...

So my question... Does this $1.25 Aeonium labeled "Voodoo" have ANY hope? What kind of action should I take? I gently tamped off most of the moist soil and dipped the roots in water/superthrive, let them dry out on paper towels... and then I put them in a crunchy soil mix. Now do I just let it sit forever before rewatering? Am I on the right track???

Who's jealous? THIS girl is jealous, that's who! That's an awesome find! Sorry I haven't gotten back to you about my 'Hobbit' I think it needs a bit to recoup from the mistreatment and then I'll send a piece off to you. Anyway, nice find!

Oooooooooo I am jealous; one I have not found! Get 'em potted right up in proper soil and they should be super pleased. It's a wonderful Aeonium time of year here, with everybody beginning to wake up from dormancy.

I know it takes a little while for it to start really cooking and that once it does, if I add anything to it, I'm starting all over again, right? Because you won't be able to turn the pile, just fill the bin as you get materials ... keep topping it off with grass clippings, dead leaves and such, keeping a reasonable balance of "wet green" versus "dry un-green" stuff. End with a layer of dried leaves and pack them down in the fall. Let it sit until when you look about 6-8 inches down it's looking like dark crumbly stuff. If you aren't turning it and watering it, it takes longer to compost but it still gets there. By next spring you should have the center core of that bin as a nice finished compost. I live in an county in northern CA that is still struggling with the recovery from the recession. There are very few homes that have been built over the past 3 years; consequently, nurseries are having a hard time. I found a nursery that had a huge selection of choice roses growing in 5 gallon fiber pots. These were marked down from $29.95 to $10.00. I had just moved into a home on 1 acre that was not landscaped. Some of the roses that we piled into the pick up included: Munstead Wood, The Squire, Claire Austin, Brother Cadfael, A Shropshire Lad, Bishop's Castle, Graham Thomas, Heather Austin, Lady Emma Hamilton, Tea Clipper, Lichtfield Angel, Sir John Betjemen, St. Swithun, Strawberry Hill, The Generous Gardiner, Windemere, Gina Lollabrigida, Jean Giorno, Centennial Star, Abbaye de Cluney, Eden, Red Eden, Black Baccara, and White Eden. Other good buys: 5 gallon citrus trees marked down from $30 to $10: Sanguinella Blood Orange, Moro Blood Orange,Tarocco Blood Orange, Oro Blanco Grapefruit/Pumello hybrid, Eustis Limquat. Vincent Female Kiwiplant and Male Pollentator Kiwiplant, marked down from $15 to $5 each. Pomegranates in 5 gallon containers, marked down from $30 to $10: Sharp Velvet, Ambrosia, and Desertni. Pear trees in 5 gallon pots marked down from $30 to $10: Bartlet, Warren, Seckel, and California (Red Bartlett x Comice); also Apple, "Belle de Boskoop". Hi pirate girl! I frequent the Hoya forum quite often. I purchased a lot of my Hoyas from EBay... But purchased two supposed EA lacunosas from big box retailers that look completely different from each other. I received an ID from the Hoya forum of my dark green as Ruby Sue and the lighter I was just guessing as Tove. You know how spotty their labeling can be. The Aeoniums that have the larger more sporadic looking leaves were labeled as "Voodoo" and listed two parent plants with Schwarzkopf being one of them. The other more bushy aeonium was purchased from an eBay seller in San Diego calling it Blushing Beauty... Not sure on that one. I have tried to be very precautious with the Hindu Rope as well as all of the clearance bin babies. Most I have systemically sprayed with a Neem/Soap/Alcohol mix I found in the Hoya forum. Admittedly, it is a pain in the rear!!! And I'm sure the Echeveria will only be tolerant of sprays if they are few and far between. The Aeoniums don't seem to mind at all. I realize it's a gamble, but they just won't make it outside in a N TX winter. I'm crossing my fingers!!! Anyhow, thank you for the advice and info. And thank you, thank you to Kathi and Hoovb! ~Sara

I just measured the distances with my fridge and wall. The fridge, including the doors, is 32" deep, plus it sits about 2" away from the back wall. The wall to the left is 30" deep. The fridge, including the space away from back wall, sticks out 4" farther than the wall. There is about 3/4" space b/w the wall and the fridge. Here are some pictures that I hope will help you to understand what I was explaining above. First is the fridge closed up against the wall. The white doors go to the pantry. I can pop the door inward if I need to open my fridge door as far as it goes, but I have never needed to. I couldn't get a good shot that would show how far the fridge sticks out compared to the wall next to it, but you can go by the measurements above. This is a picture of the drawer open until it hits the pantry door, which is closed in this picture. Even though it looks funny, I have no problem getting food out from this side of the fridge. On rare occasion, if I need to, I just open the other fridge door to give me more room. Here is a picture of the left door partially open (until it hits pantry door which is closed) w/fruit bin open. The drawer opens 7.5" with the left door not opened all the way. It doesn't look as if it's open that much, but it is! And here is the fruit bin with the fridge door open as far as it is meant to open (pantry door popped inward to allow for this). The bin only opens an extra 1.5" so it's really not the big of a deal. 7.5" gives me plenty of room to get out what I need. Oh my, just noticed the nice handprint from one of my kids on the door in the picture above! :) And here is a picture of the Cool Select Drawer open - it is unimpeded by the fridge doors and opens all the way regardless of whether or not I have the fridge doors open partially or all the way. This is with the doors partially open. Can you tell we eat alot of cheese?? And just to compare, here is the Cool Select Drawer open with both doors open as far as they can go - no difference! Hope this helps. Sorry I couldn't get a better picture of where the wall ends compared to how much further the fridge sticks out but I couldn't get a good vantage point to take that angle. wow, good find! lucky you! is that clearance at OSH? I've found some succulents for .25 at lowe's. Not these particular succulent, but some fang succulents.

Hi All,

Sorry I have no idea what these initial are that you're both referring to.

PPG, can I offer the suggestion that you not dip the roots of succulents into any liquids? It sort of re-wets them when one really needs them to dry out & stabilize.

What's in your crunchy mix? How will you know when to water under those rocks (pretty, but not so practical, if you're a newbie, even not, maybe somewhat less so)? Sometimes the less one does, the better.

That Gollum looks great, nice staging.

Nice find, but beware the clearance bins, sometimes the plants are buggy &/or diseased (not always so visible or easy to see); also check under the outside pot rims.

I'm a third year gardener, pirate girl. Still soaking up whatever I can! I thought that dipping the root might be a bad idea, but sometimes my flights of fancy are already in motion before I actually stop to think. So then I grabbed the paper towels!

My mix is perlite, orchid bark, and 1/4" gravel. I put a few of the larger river stones on top to hold in the stalks... and to look pretty. But you're right, with the Gollum it's been sort of a pain checking the moisture. I'm new to this type of soil as it is! I have no idea how often to water! I have about 12 Hoyas in a fast draining perlite orchid bark mix which seems a little easier to 'read'. Jades and succulents in mostly rocky soils are completely new to me!

As far as bugs and willpower against the clearance bins... I really like neem spray. And I try to keep most new plants away from the rest until they seem healthy. I WOULD be pretty hacked off if a $1.25 plant ruined my meager collection though!

I guess I'm at a live and learn stage right now with succulents... I want to thank all of you for contributing to that process! I have come so far in my precious Texas natives and Hoyas... So I hope to have the same luck here!
