what was the verdict on cutting into woody stems?

The bottom of the two clematis Asao I got are completely leafless and woody for about 18 inches. When I eventually prune these down, am I right in thinking I won't harm anything by chopping them down to about 6 inches? I seem to recall seeing conversations about this before, but I can't find the thread.
