Nuisance woody stem just bloomed - what is it?

Hi all,

I'm writing from Baltimore, MD, zone 7. I've been trying for a couple of years to pull out woody stems from my front bank, where I have various ground covers growing. they are impossibly to pull so i've been left with just cutting them back to the ground when i get around to trying to deal with it. The thing just bloomed on what appears to be the old woody part of the stem. Maybe that's why I haven't seen blooms before.

The part in front of my hand is new growth this year and the part that looks like pretty old wood is the bit where the bloom is. Bloom is light red with yellow centers.

Leaves:

It's hard to see, but there are many stems about a foot long sticking out from the ground cover (mostly vinca, some ivy and honeysuckle):

Anyone know what this thing is? It's possible that there are roots from old overgrown shrubs that we may have cut to the ground several years ago when we bought the house. I don't see any other blooms - just that one!

Thank you everyone!!
