Poor clematis looks awful

Hi,

I have a Clematis Duchess of Edinburg and it is looking awful. This year was it's second year and still no blooms. I have clay soil that is about 6.4ph and the roots are shaded by a shrub growing in front of it. We had so little rain this summer, I was constantly watering the yard, but I was concentrating on a 120 ft border of newly planted trees and shrubs and forgot the clematis a couple of times. The leaves are light green..which I am not sure if that is normal or not, and all the edges of the leaves are brown. Is this going to survive the winter and is there anything special I should be doing besides not letting it dry out again?

Adam
