Opinion on letting my Proteus go to seed, Please

I have been letting my proteus go to seed this year and don't know if I should have allowed all of the blooms to go to seed or if I should have dead headed some to allow more of the energy to go to a select number of them. What is your opinion on the matter? I realize I will not get true proteus seedlings from them but am just trying this for fun. This will be my first time trying to collect seeds from a clem. Thanks to all!

Tracy, it really just depends on how many seeds you want. On mine that I am allowing to go to seed, I am letting each and every one that gets fertilized go to seed since I have quite a few people that I am sending seed off to for germination purposes.

Good news. I am hoping to get a lot of seeds. I just didn't know if I over did it with allowing all to seed. Really just a first experiment for me! I have been looking at many of the seed collecting and germinating sites, not to mention numerous posts that you and Buyorsell have responded to. I am gathering all the info I can. The two of you have been such a help so far and you didn't even know it! Thank you!

You have a lovely home. I think the front of the house picture needs to show the front better, though I appreciate that the realtor was trying to show the really nice big yard you have, and I don't disagree with doing that. I love the HGTV shows on how to sell a house. I see two things that others mentioned above, that I feel they would suggest. First of all, you are making your living room seem smaller than it is with so many very large pieces of furniture. I would get rid of one of the overstuffed chairs, the wood chair, and the entertainment shelving. I would then rearrange the furniture so that it is a cozy conversation area around the fireplace and tv. The other problem area is that you have no dining room. They would say that you need to show the buyers what the room really is and would suggest you store the piano and put a dining room set in there. The piano in the dining room also points out that the living room is too small to have room for a piano. I understand you do not want to store the piano. The chandelier does help to show that the room is really a dining room. You have decluttered nicely, you have neutral colors, it is clean and fresh looking. So except for these two problems, I think the home shows well. Your yard is well landscaped and lush. They usually set up the patio to sell it with a party setting on the patio table with tropical themed linens and tableware, hurricane candles and a bowl of fruit. I also agree that the narrative is fine. When I saw mention of fans, I feared you have no AC, but I see you do. Good luck.

dowlinggram: I do take cuttings, but I put emphasis on viable specimens, those which can make it throughout the year and make their own seed. Recently, I've encountered unlabled zonal hybrids which produce lots of leaves while keeping a short stem. Their leaves are solid green and dentate. (Leaves look like a sprocket with round "teeth"). Summer is a good time to collect the seed from maturing seed pods. Fall (if the winter is mild i.e. no frost), is a good time for winter-growers to propagate by seeds and cuttings. Maritza: Right, I've read it somewhere in this forum that seed-grown bear fewer flowers, but one can grow a new cultivar only from seed, and then he/she may take cuttings if the plant is to their satisfaction. I highly recommend doing this, as new cultivars often bring surprises.

Hi Joey, I think I bought Spotlight in the winter of 2014? It's initial blooms were all deformed or at least turned sideways - in retrospect I should have taken pictures of the very crippled ones with lower amounts of flowering organs or misshapen stamen but I disliked them too much! :D In 2016 it got rid of all the drawbacks and had very increased coloration - here under different light conditions: I think I tried pollinating papilio with it and will try to continue if my papilio decides to flower! Spotlight is pushing again two scapes and I'm very pleased with it even though I vas very impressed with the Sonatini bloom here - I think it's 1623? The color is much more satuarated. Going back to my own Spotlight pictures I think the real color was a little closer to the second picture - I'm very curious how it performs this year after repotting. Carl

Glad to be of help Tracy. The only thing that I have come up with on reflection as to number of seeds is that I might be hesitant to allow a newly planted clematis have too many seeds develop since seed production is a big energy zapper to the plant. Possibly this might sap too much strength from the plant but then again, providing the plants with plenty of nutrients might counteract the energy used up for seed production. It probably won't be an issue any way since most of my newly planted clematis have never produced many, if any, seeds. Established plants shouldn't be affected at all.

I have had it for 3 years now and have ammended the soil with humus and manure every spring. This is the first year that I have not dead headed the blooms. What do you think?

I say let it produce all the seed you want. By now it should be well established that the seed production should not be an issue.

That is good to know. Thank you very much! I am heading out to a 1/2 off perennial sale. Seeing if they have some more clems for my fence. I think I am addicted.
