Do Clematis readily seed in the garden. This year I am not sure if they are climbing weeds, but plants with leaves and habit just like Clematis are everywhere.

Can anyone comment?

It depends on the clematis and the area and whether or not one mulches and if the weather is cooperative.

While others have posted occasional seedlings from their clematis I haven't had much self seeding from the over 100 clematis that I grow. Recta has self seeded with three young plants this past 2 years. And clematis serifolia has started seeding about. I pulled that one as don't want to deal with its seedlings. Clematis Sweet Autumn has become an invasive plant with its seedlings in many parts of the US.

I know, here in NC, Paniculata is in bloom now and it's everywhere. It nearly killed a climbing rose of mine.

My vines must be weeks. It's amazing how they mimic clematis.

Thanks...do you grow Ruguchi? It's my favorite.

That really does not look to me like Umbellularia californica to me. As Larry said, the leaves should have a very strong bay leaf smell when rubbed (it is California bay laurel after all). Also if it is a bay laurel, the fruit should be somewhat mushy when ripe (it is related to the avocado) with a single large, round, smooth seed that is most of the volume of the fruit. As I said it really doesn't look like that to me, plus I don't seem many of those growing in the Sac area, they like it slightly cooler and less dry. You'll see them all over Marin, the peninsula, up around Napa, and in the east bay towards Diablo but not much past say Fairfield going towards the valley. Also, the leaves are narrower and the new growth can look a bit purple. What does the inside of the fruit look like? Lots and lots of volunteer privets in the valley, but those should have opposite leaves. Does pittosporum have a smell? Plenty of those in the valley too. If the fruit has multiple seeds, that would be my vote. r

Volunteer tomatoes (I think) everywhere

Ha ha ha. After I posted this, I did some hard thinking and now I remember I DID put tomatoes in the pile. A boatload of green ones when the frost finally came. (I don't like green tomatoes) And it would have been the exact same time I was putting in those pumpkins from my uncle's fall display....they were too hard to chop up so I left them out until they froze overnight, then thawed, and then they were mush. The pumpkins heated the pile, but obviously not enough. LOL. I've got pumpkin plants (or maybe gourds, I dunno) sprouting in lots of places too. ROFL. In the areas where I've got other curcurbits, I'll just have to let them grow until fruit sets because I can't tell them apart from the melons, cukes and squash. On the tomatoes, I'll pull most of them up, but I'm going to leave a couple just to see what I get. I didn't grow any cherries or grapes...some Better Boys, Early Girls, Caspian Pink and something else I've forgotten. Gonna be fun to see what I end up with. All the plants are ROBUST and healthy as heck. Of course they're growing in a layer of compost! When they first erupted, I thought they were marigolds because I've planted those everywhere. It's taken me a few weeks to accept that I've got tomatoes everywhere. LOL. I got my pile up to 175 in late winter, but obviously only the top half. The pumpkins and tomatoes were in the bottom. I've decided to buy one of those winged compost aerator things so I can mix it up better. I was just kind of fluffing. It's all education....each year I learn more and more. :)

What kind of Japanese Red Maple is this?

Although they don't breed "true" the seed is worth using. You'll get a large range of leaf color and shape from this tree, it's actually quite fun to see what you get. I got some Jap. Maple seeds from my uncle 10 years ago, he has a green-leaved cultivar and one of the deep purple cutleaf cultivars...the seeds were from both trees and I'm certain some cross-pollination went on...the seedlings ranged from plain green "species" type, to green of various shapes and red and purple of various shapes. I ended up with three of them growing in the ground - others I gave away or weeded out. Although I left Ohio last year and the trees behind in my old yard, there were three that I had left growing on in the ground. One was a cutleaf green that leafed out a deep red, but turned to a deep green when the leaves matured, and a nice red in fall. Had I been smart I would have checked into seeing if I could patent the variety. It's really a beautiful little tree.

There are various reasons the seeds may drop early - the tree is under stress, abrupt weather changes, excessive seed production, etc. Whatever the reason, those seeds that drop now are not yet properly formed nor sufficiently ripe to provide successful germination. I'd just let it be and assume at least a few seed capsules will hold on until their normal fall drop time. Sometimes plants will go through a cycle where they attempt to overproduce seeds and the excess amount is aborted early. Unless there is anything else obviously amiss with your JM's I'm not sure I'd be very worried.

If you are not sure you might watch them or pot them up and see if they flower next year. Weeds will likely flower this year and then you will know to pull them.

I have a young Rooguchi that was planted this year. Have heard great comments about it.

I have 23 different Clematis in my garden. The only Clematis that reseeds freely in my garden is C. terniflora - Sweet Autumn. I just about pull my hair because they are very difficult to pull out.

C. jackmanii has produced two seedlings for me. And that is the extent of seedlings in my garden.

Thanks so much, you guys! Yes they are Sweet Autumn paniculata. One of them just bloomed. I used to have a big one that was killing a climbing rose so these are its offspring.

They are all over the roadways in my area near Sanford right now. I did not realize they were so invasive. I will pick and choose which ones I keep, I guess. Hard for me to kill anything flowering...LOL.

BTW, why don't I get emails when someone posts to my question. Do you have to be a paying member?

As far as I know there are no paid memberships at GW. Did you check the box below the posting box for e-mail notification? Seems I have heard others complain about erratic notification so may be a GW internal problem.

Glad you were able to identify your clematis plants. Wish I could take one of your rejects as my SA have never seeded and I killed another one last winter when I tried to overwinter it in a wooden barrel. Saw some plants in bloom but they didn't have much scent so will be looking at other places here. I miss that wonderful fragrance.
