What kind of Japanese Red Maple is this?

I am going to add the seeds to my trade list, but I want to be sure what to identify it as in the description. This is a large maple (I am guessing 15' at this time?), not a dwarf species. I have seen ones with other growth habits. This has very graceful growing habit. I used the trees as an example of winter gardening, since they are usually very colorful, and in the winter, more of their gracefully curving branches show! I get volunteer seedlings all over the place every year too.

You already have the name you need. Even if it is not an unselected seedling itself (referable to A. palmatum var. atropurpureum, a name which embraces all Japanese maples that are more or less typical except for having purple leaves) all seedlings raised from its seeds will be. Named cultivars are propagated by grafting and sometimes cuttings, so that the propagules are clones of the original. Seedlings of Japanese maple cultivars are not considered entitled to the cultivar name. Some of those raised from the seeds of this tree will not even have purple leaves.

Hi, very interesting tree! I would e-mail them (Sooner) a picture and ask them what it is because a) the shape of it has been trained in over many years and tells you nothing about the variety, and b) even with a close-up picture of a leaf (which is really the only thing that would help anyway), it still might be hard as you've acknowledged, as there are hundreds of Japanese maples, loads of them looking alike, and even an expert might have trouble. Also, many have been mixed and matched genetically over time so whether or not any one is even not-a-graft or an original species is impossible to tell sometimes unless you actually know.

Depends upon your personal taste. I would not go for the black mondo as it is too dark/ brooding under a redleaved tree. Prefer something brighter, A greygreen would be subtle contrast, with an Geranium renardii (what is the soil like, by the way.), Some golden green cheerful contrast, with some medium, solid goldengreen Hosta (August moon), How important is an winter aspect, do Hellebores grow in Z5 . I am interested in your columbine seeds. If possible I would take some of each color. I can send you some other colors? I have purple and purple with white, I have two shades of pink. As for Japanese maples, it is easier to take cuttings than to start from seeds. More chance of getting same as parent tree. I have one here but am not sure if mature enough to produce seeds yet. will keep an eye on it though. Send me an email directly and we can exchange addresses. That is quite a nice tree! I agree with the pruning and I would not move it, dig it up, or other... I'm relatively new to Japanese Maples, so I'm not really comfortable directing you on specific pruning methods, however, much advice can be found online. One approach would be to find a picture of one you really like and shape your tree similarly. Remember that MAJOR pruning should be done over a couple of years so as not to shock the tree... Any idea how old that one is?

Although they don't breed "true" the seed is worth using. You'll get a large range of leaf color and shape from this tree, it's actually quite fun to see what you get.

I got some Jap. Maple seeds from my uncle 10 years ago, he has a green-leaved cultivar and one of the deep purple cutleaf cultivars...the seeds were from both trees and I'm certain some cross-pollination went on...the seedlings ranged from plain green "species" type, to green of various shapes and red and purple of various shapes. I ended up with three of them growing in the ground - others I gave away or weeded out.

Although I left Ohio last year and the trees behind in my old yard, there were three that I had left growing on in the ground. One was a cutleaf green that leafed out a deep red, but turned to a deep green when the leaves matured, and a nice red in fall. Had I been smart I would have checked into seeing if I could patent the variety. It's really a beautiful little tree.

Thanks for the follow-up.

As far as I have seen all over the lawn and garden, all of the seedlings have those deeply colored red leaves. They pop up in droves all over the yard, especially around the base of the tree. I was surprised to hear that some of them could grow green.

I was wondering if the seeds would have the same growth habit as the original tree. From your note, it does not sound like it. I have seen a lot of the Japanese Red Maples with a more upright type of growth.
