My first citrus plant... Nervous and excited!!!

So excited! I ordered a key lime plant from logees two weeks ago and Its getting delivered tomorrow!

This is my first citrus plant so any advice or tips will greatly be appreciated!!

Congrats! And welcome to the club. Will you have your tree potted? I'll assume you've been looking through this forum to get a good idea of how to take care of your new tree.

Key limes are some of the easier citrus to take care of and fruit often. Citrus are heavy feeders, so after the the tree has settled into its new spot. Think of a mild fertilizer regiment and adjust accordingly. Citrus also like to be in a medium that doesn't stay soaked after watering. Let the soil get pretty dry in between watering to prevent root rot.

If you want to see your tree explode in growth, rinse the old mix as as much as you can as soon as you can, and pot it up in a very porous mix in a larger container, such as the 5.1.1 mix..Feed and lot's of sunlight after you have acclimated it to the sun..

If you want to see it stay about the same size or get a bit bigger, you could use a professinal bagged mix and pot it up one size after teasing the roots up a bit to help it grow into the new mix then repot as it gets bigger through the years.
Once the roots fill the pot up or if the mix either becomes too compacted or hydrophobic, do the same process over again..

Lots of good advice here! The larger the pots, the better. 20-gallon pots are not too big. You can get those brightly-colored tubs with the rope handles (anywhere but WalMart - theirs are thin, cheap, weak) for $8-9, the same kind except heavy-duty tubs for use around livestock (~$23), Rubbermaid totes in all sizes, and synthetic fabric Smart Pots (~$8). All but the Smart Pots will need to have drainage holes drilled in them. Check your local phonebook for hydroponic supplies, as many of them seem to be selling the Smart Pots. Just remember that anything that isn't designed for outdoor use or for plants is not going to be UV-resistant, and will get brittle after a year or three, and self-destruct (maybe sooner if you have large, rambunctious dogs). If you or a friend has a pickup truck, forget the bagged potting soil and buy a cubic yard of soil from a place that sells landscaping materials. One cubic yard will fill about 10 20-gallon pots much more cheaply than buying by the bag. Don't assume --ASK what their soil consists of. And tell them what you're doing with it (planting vegetables in pots). If they're honest, they should help you out with selling you the right stuff. Get some good organic fertilizer and follow the directions. Feeding more than they advise is not better. For fall peas, call a Master Gardener at your local Cooperative Extension Office and ask what is the best fall date for planting peas -- they should know. If you need a snail/slug bait, look for Sluggo, Worry-Free, any with an active ingredient of iron phosphate, which is basically non-toxic to kids and pets (but NOT if they eat it by the spoonful -- scatter it thinly). Man, I can't believe all the stuff you guys do to germinate these babies. I like my method of just sticking them in the starter greenhouse and setting it in the breezeway. I guess if you don't have a cold room or area like that to put them, it is necessary to refrigerate them. I'm just so excited about them popping up in the starter cells without any fuss. I see new seedlings popping up all the time. I had one whole section of the cells that I was afraid weren't going to do anything, but when I got home for lunch today, another new baby had begun to emerge in that section, finally! I filled up two more of those 72-cell starters last weekend, and I can't wait to see what they produce. My biggest baby already has split and is branching out in two directions!! I'll have a tiny rose "bush" soon!! That one is from ELSIE MELTON. My best germinator so far tho, seems to be LAVANDE. There are 6-7 of them! I can't wait to see how different each one will be. This is so much fun!!

Excited! Going to K&M for my first Fortuniana roses on Saturday!

Well I went to visit Mr. Mills at K&M today. He was a very friendly man and patiently showed me all of his different roses. He has several huge rows of all the different plants he sells. Almost every bush was close to or taller than 6 feet, and none of them looked like sticks with a bloom on the end. They all had plenty of leaves and were very full. Even in July, almost all of them were covered in blooms. He had a small greenhouse where he has special varieties in large pots that he said his wife will be using for cut flowers. He also showed me his small greenhouse with all of his fortuniana stock. He showed me some small pots of some cuttings he said he started only a month ago, and you could already see the white roots growing out of the bottom of the pot. I don't know why it completely slipped my mind to take pictures! I was so busy trying to figure out which plants I wanted. I ended up not really getting much in the way of the old fashioned varieties, but went with his recommendations for plants that he liked the best and said performed the best. This is what I ended up buying: Bronze Star (AMAZING strong fragrance, beautiful color on a very large thick plant. This was in a 5 gallon but he gave it to me for the 2 gallon price) Neptune Gemini St. Patrick Elina (a creamy yellow--the best looking of all of his bushes in my opinion. Was the best looking as far as foliage and bush shape--I got 2 of these) Marlon's Day (a pinker sport of Moonstone) Hot Princess Medallion Heart of Gold Carolina Pride Jema There were so many beautiful plants, it was almost impossible to choose. I really would love to have a Peace on fortuniana, but he said he really doesn't grow those anymore because they just don't perform well. He also said he coming to an agreement with David Austin and will probably have them available next season, so I'm really looking forward to that. Mr. Mills said the difference between fortuniana and any other rootstock in the South is like night and day. I am really excited to see how it works for me. All the plants I got were covered in new growth with NO blackspot or any other blemishes. Several had blooms and buds. Even the couple of 1 gallon plants were quite large. It was interesting to see how much smaller the fortuniana stock is compared to the much thicker and knobby stocks like Dr. Huey. I can see why it is recommended to stake. Anyway, now I am really motivated to get my bed ready and am counting the days to plant out in the fall. That way I'll have almost 6 months of growth before next spring's first flush.

Yea, I'm looking forward to tasting the Biker's. I wasn't going to grow Jalapenos at all, but figured I would give them a try. Looks like everything but the Choc 7-Pot and the Peri-Peri has started growing. Nothing noteworthy enough to post yet, but they all are starting to pop out of the seed a little bit, including the Bhut. And only in 3 days!

My newly planted key lime is not in a container, but it is a key lime none the less. Planted in February. Doing very well and has lots of small limes on it. Good draining soil and lots of water and fertilizer and plenty of Arizona sunshine. Love those limes!

I'm very new to this, I'm not quite sure what you mean by rinse the old mix. And when I plant it into the new mix do I keep the old mix and plant it together or just get rid of it completely?

Cynjrana, he is advising you to completely remove the old mix as much as possible (rinsing off the old mix-- but keep the roots moist while they are in transition, if they dry out they'll die!), then pot into 5-1-1.
I haven't done it (yet), but people talk about using a chopstick to push mix in between the roots-- you don't want to have any air pockets around the roots, it'll kill them. Your tree is small enough it probably won't be hard to get mix around all the roots, though. :)

Been away ten days.returned, tree seems to have new leaves but still yellow spots on older leafs. How long will it be before the tree can hold lemons, had small buds previously, turned black and fell off. I don't have any buds now, new blossoms coming out but that's it. Will the tree make small buds that turn yellow, then black before falling off again, how often does this happen, before you get healthily lemons that stay on the tree
