Should I cut wilting Niobe to the ground now?

I bought a mature Niobe with a trellis 2 months ago. Some of it went into a wilt but it kept growing new leaves and kept blooming. Now that the flowers are gone, it seems to have much more black leaves and stems. I'm not sure how to cut back a group 2 clematis. If I cut it back now will I harm it?

I'm assuming it went into wilt because of the stress of settling in. I have a Jackmanii that did the same thing 3 years ago and has been blooming beautifully ever since.
