should I replant or move my rose bush?
Comments (6)Seil I lifted it up and added soil underneath and then put it back into the hole. Its raised up a bit more now and looks good. I have another question for you. Another rose I planted near this one at the same time now has a couple of yellow leaves. The others I planted along the same flower bed are looking nice and green and already showing new growth. This one in particular is called the Just Joey. The soil is still pretty wet from a couple of days of heavy rain so i doubt its thirsty. Could these just be older leaves getting ready to drop? There are no spots or lines. The leaves are just yellowing as if they are old. These are all own-root about 6 inches tall. Just this one is not looking as good as the others. Am I just over reacting? Is this normal in such a young plant?...See Moreis this black spot? Should I remove the leaves?
Comments (7)This is probably blackspot. The lesions are characterized by fringy margins. You may as well remove the spotted leaves now, as they will die anyway. No need to worry about blackspot in Southern California. You don't have enough rain for it to be a chronic problem. No need to worry about introducing any fungus to the garden. Either it will always be there because the climate favors it or it will rarely if ever be much of a problem. (Possible exception might be downy mildew.)...See Moreshould I cut back my smoke bush?
Comments (4)I'm no expert, but have found my smoke bush to be the last thing to bud-out here in Ontario. I have also found that cutting back to about 1 foot high results in a rounder, more symetrical shrub and it still gets to be the same height! If yours has not budded out, I would try cutting it back....See MoreOh no! Black spot on rose bushes
Comments (17)Steffie, I'm hoping for rain next week because we haven't had much this month and the trees need it. OF course, before that rain falls I have a lot of stuff to get into the ground, so I hope it doesn't get here too quickly! I have been meaning to plant a New Dawn rose ever since we moved here, and think I have finally found the place I want to put one. Might have to go rose shopping soon! And, I agree, the fragrance from the florist's roses can't hold a candle to the fragrance from the roses in our gardens. I use scent as part of the criteria when selecting a rose. If it doesn't smell good, I don't want it! It HAS been a depressing week, first with the Virginia Tech shootings, then the anniversary of the OKC bombing, and, of course, the anniversary also of the Waco/Branch Davidian tragedy and the anniversary today of Columbine. I think this is the hardest week of the year, because the news stories are always full of remembrance of these tragedies. I have mostly left my TV turned off and retreated to my lawn and garden this week where it is generally peaceful and serene. My family says I am in "my own little world" when I am out in the garden. They are correct, and I love it there! Dawn...See MoreMoses, Pittsburgh, W. PA., zone 5/6, USA
