I just took the Chalk Hill plunge! It literally took me several weeks to get my list down to a respectable dollar amount with the help of some getting sold out. I started getting scared I was going to miss out on this great deal & the cultivars I wanted & finally said what's $120? I know there was a previous thread about the high cost of shipping, but they still amount to being cheaper per clematis than I can find around here. Plus, I can't find the majority of those cultivars either. I can't believe all the good ones that are still available!

I still might pick up a few more if I get my bonus before the 27th. I really wanted Eyre's gift too, but too little info on it at this point. I've read it is a jackmanii type but listed as a pruning 2? I can't believe that when a plant is distributed they can't even get this part of the info correct?! Especially it being a Barry Fretwell introduction! If anyone has experience with this 1, let me know.

Another that I was really interested in is Heather Herschel. I read it is supposed to be an improved version of Alionushka (which I can't believe I found at a local nursery, she will be beautiful growing up my Vanderwolf Pine!). Does anyone have this 1? By the comparison, I would assume she has very stiff stems like Alionushka? If she is laxed, I would like to grow her with Harlow Carr.

Since they are so cheap, I wanted to do a little zone pushing & get:

a montana cultivar - anyone in zone 5 growing this? Should I try a later blooming 1?

Sundance - anyone experienced with this 1? Rated Z6 & prune 3, so it might just work for me. I'm a little nervous about the weediness of the tangutica group. My neighbor just gave me an offspring of her Radar Love & I will be watching it VERY closely. Sundance is listed as part of this group, but to my understanding doesn't grow like it, just a sprawler that gets 7'x7'. I wonder if it will be weedy?

florida Pistachio - what can I say? I like green tinged white flowers...you should see my latest echinacea collection.

alpina Betina - I wish I could see it in person to get the true gist of the red.

Scroll down to the clematis section & see that they have scottii for only $6(of course smaller than chalk hill's)! I checked Garden Watchdog & they aren't listed so I am hesitating. I LOVE the hirsutissima Bergen Park Form! That is how I convinced myself not to get the Lone Pine & the columbiana v. tenuiloba from Chalk Hill. I couldn't live w/o scottii & if I have to order another to meet their $35 min order, I will. Have any of you mail ordered from a place not on the Watchdog?

From the link below I think I found my answer about that nursery as well as developing my first urge to start something from seed.

About a month ago I bought a fremontii that I adore the foilage on & can't wait to see it bloom. I could definately stand a few more of those if the pictures I've seen hold true. It would be fun to see if the seeds purchased at several different companies vary at all.

I got a gallon sized Eyre's Gift at a local nursery in April 07. The first blooming was in late May and the second in September. This year the new life appeared in April and the first flowers in late June. We had a hard Winter with lots of snow, and all my newer clems upper parts died.It only has about 3 stems this year, but has had a few flowers constantly since June. I plan to cut it back some when the last buds have finished. And will be treating it as a type 2 in subsequent years.

I was/am very impressed with the blueness and rebloom. I didn't get that great of pictures yet this year.

I tried my future dil's nikon coolpix p80...and thought it did just wonderful for what it does...and I have the dslr's...I said to dh wow...I wouldn't have spent so much money on one if I had one of these...It does a wonderful job...kinda spendy but it depends on how much you want to spend...I think any camera has it pros and cons...I had hp photosmart for my 1st, fujifinepix 2nd, and an olympus sp 550 3rd for point n shoots...best thing is get it your hand and see how it feels... I had the same thing happen to my 3 in one, not being supported with computer...when I tried to get drivers updated at hp's site it(it was from hp) said it would no longer support or have disc's to replace what I had... Hope this has been helpful...have been in your shoes...actually gardening inspired me to become an enthusiast for photography... Juanita

I have one of the counter top ones without heat settings and it will only dry a few trays well. Tomatoes and plums have so much moisture they take a long time to dry in them. I also have a large 20 tray with top half and bottom half heat settings and a fan and it dries very well. If you can get fairly even slices or pieces it sure helps. this is what I use to dry plums, pears, apples, jerky.

Thanks Diane. Running around just got back home. Visited my old backyard neighbor at the nursing home, then went grocery shopping for New Years Eve.......The Ingenious is not a large rose in my garden, it's under a pine tree, it might be bigger if it doesn't have to fight with the tree roots. It's about 4' tall and 3' wide (on top). I love this rose, regret I didn't get a bare root from DA last year, now they don't sell it anymore. I know Linda at LongAgoRoses has it. My gardens are messy, filled with weeds, you sure can see that in the photos. :-) I am a part time rose gardener, a part time rider, a full time worker, so I don't have a lot of time to keep the gardens looking neat......I love your Young Lycidas & Jude The Obscure, they're in my DA shopping cart since day 1. I also like Charles Rennie Mackintosh,Wollorton Old Hall, Royal Jubilee, Comte De Chambord, England's Rose, Janet, Thomas A Becket...... but without the 25% coupon, I have to take some out of the cart....... Most of my DAs are from Hortico, that's my go to place. I only order roses from DA if I can't find it on Hortico's website. Now I have to go back to the DA 's shopping cart to take out some roses......their roses are soooo expensive, not a cheerful process. :-) Teka2, thanks for the coupon code!

What's happening with the current art above the fireplace? That looks good. You have some really cool pieces in your space! Couldn't you swag your current light fixture? I really like your mirror but don't think it's suited for its present location. Would you need curtains or stronger light filtering blinds for the window in your dining area? If you can share a layout of the space with dimensions, you'll probably increase your chances of getting PROs' advice. They (and lucky cat owners) might be able to offer suggestions for a non-cat-scratch-post chair. After our cat experience, I couldn't even hazard a guess as to what material wouldn't interest a cat. :)

Thank you very much, Marie! You should advise Hummingbird Farms & Pride of Place Plants. I wonder where all the confustion came in? You are now officially the Eyre's Gift guinee pig!

I have been collecting pretty much all the blues, purples & whites that I can get my hands on to use as a backdrop to my gardens. The very few pictures that I have seen of Eyre's Gift (1) is a real pale luminescent blue. I know it is really hard to get a good pic of the blues true color & was wondering if there is another cultivar you would compare it to? Is it unique & stand out amongst the other blues?

I got my Eyre at Hummingbird -- 47 miles from my house. Cindy said "We're looking forward to getting to know Eyres Gift!
It is often described as a 'Jackmanii type', which implies it is a Hard Prune variety.
However, all our sources list it as a Moderate Prune clematis.
Hmm...guess we'll have to make up our own minds on that!"

Since she has it listed with the ELFs, I would say that she thinks of it this way too. Don't know where PoP got there info, I'm at lunch at work now & don't have the link here to that site.

I've decided that for me, any questionable types will be treated based on when they flower. ie "Minister" is suposed to be type 3, but it is one of my earliest non-atragene bloomers. So my pruning will be light.

Will try to work on the comparisons tonight.

I found a truer color of Eyre that I had misfiled.

If you are familiar with Baltyk, Eyre is a little smaller flower with coloring similar to Baltyk's middle stage color,

But not as pinkish a cast.

Eyre is lighter than Ramona or Elsa Spaath.

Thank you very, very much eden in me! I am not familiar with Baltyk, but have Ramona & Elsa. I am definitely looking for a paler blue with zero pink in it to go along with what I planted in 1 area & Eyre's Gift it is! I am adding it on!
