Cultural questions for installing a new Brugs bed.

Hi everyone,

I hope you all had a fun filled but safe holiday this year. i know i did. I was fortunate to have some family from Florida come to Thanksgiving all the way up in NY! I don't know if I would want to even come back for Thanksgiving considering how much warmer it is in FL!

Anyhow, I was fortunate to be one of the winners of Kathy's Brugs contest. I got all my cuttings in great shape and now, I am getting them growing. I did this last year with no troubles. I just rooted the cuttings in a glass of water. I changed the water daily and with a short amount of time, I had roots and shoots. I then potted them up in a high quality potting soil that I added some perlite to for drainage. The potting soil was holding a little too much water for my liking.

Then, I put them outside in a site that recieved full morning sun and the brugs took off! I could not believe how fast they were growing for me! It was almost like watching my musa 'basjoo' growing but the banana still was growing much faster.

Back then, I wasn't in to the Brugs as much so I wasn't really reading too many older posts here to learn more. The one frustrating point I learned about quickly was why my brgus were not blooming as fast as I had hoped. I don't remember who it was at the time, but I was told that the brugs would have to form a "Y" before it would form buds. I was checking everyday for that darn "Y", and finally the one 'Frosty pink' did it but one out of 4??

Basically I need to know what I am doing wrong. I know that most plants have specific care instructions so they will thrive and bloom. I would like to know about fertilizers and another thing I know I am going to do diffrently is that I am just going to plant the cutting right into the flower bed instead.

In order to do this succesfully, I wanted to know what soil would be the best for them? Would it be a good idea to add some well rotted compost or cow manure to the bottom of the hole, then add soil on top of that and then plant the brug? I have 4 existing flower beds. I know I cannot have anymore since this is an apartment house is good size along with the yard. The 2 front flower beds I want to convert into tropicalesque borders with the brugs, plumeria and my tropical fruit trees as the main attraction. My 2 back yard borders are also up against the house. One is quite small but it has nothing in it so I can really just plant brugs in there. The other flower bed is my hummingbird and butterfly garden but trust me, I will be ripping out a bunch of the perrenials that I don't like anymore, or they just didn't grow well for me.

I appreciate anyone who takes the time to help me out. Sorry for the long post but I have so many questions still that I need answers for.

Ammend the soil with loads of compost, worm casings, sharp sand (if you have clay) and well rotted manure. I like bat guano or chicken manure better then cow manure but I honestly don't know if it really makes much of a difference. Most important is make sure it's a well draining site. I think it's a good idea to plant them inground as soon as conditions allow. I wish I had enough space to plant all my brugs in the yard.

It sounds like they are in a good location with am sun but you don't want full afternoon shade. Filtered sun in the pm is best. Even with rich soil they are still heavy feeders. I add some granulated fertilizer or something like Osmocote and still use a water soluable fertilizer weekly during the growing season. I start with a balanced fertilizer and switch to a bloom booster on mature plants (higher phosphorus/ middle number) once they've been in the ground for a while and have put on a lot of vegetative growth. Some plants are just going to take a long time to bloom regardless of what you do and weather conditions have a lot to do with it. It's been 3 years since I've had a really good brug season. The high heat we had last summer caused so much bud drop with my plants. I'd go thru several Y's without any blooms due to bud drop. I had a few plants that were absolute monsters by the time they finally held their buds. On the flip side I had a few tiny plants bloom where the flower was bigger then the entire plants. It also depends on where the original cutting was taken from. If it was taken from above a previous Y or included a Y it will likely bloom sooner then a cutting taken below a Y or a plant that had not yet formed a Y. This is what has worked for me over the past 10 or so years. Other people have other methods that work well for them. You'll eventually find what works best for your particular growing conditions. I guess I should be headed in the right directions since my beds in the back do get good morning sun and they still get the afternoon sun, just not as much. They definetly are not shaded. I will ammend the soil but i know it is fast draining soil. I have been really lucky considering the soil was just filler that the workers put in after they finnished working on the apartment. I have been growing all kinds of stuff in that soil without adding a bunch of fertilizers. My roses are growing great and they are heavy feeders yet I have not been fertilizing the way I should be.

I just pulled a pecan tree out of one of the potted brugs today, lol. If I had realized what it was I'd have been more careful. We could start a pecan farm, lol. The golden rain tree is cool. I got too baby hollies I dug out of the flower bed today. If the bad parts in the middle aren't hollow feeling I would leave them alone. If they are I would cut off the healthy ends and try to root them. I have some that got stem damage and some is healthy just brown and gnarly looking. I was so upset today I finally trimmed the hedges I got to take my frustration out on something, lol. I found a bunch of my moonvines are sprouting so if you want some stop by and I can fish you some out. I already seperated about 6 of them out and planted them all over and still have quite a few in the pot germinating. I had just buried them all in the same pot one was growing in last winter and left them there not thinking they would all make it, lol. Things are not working out for my get together with my sister and the boys grandmother is dying of cancer so I think I am going to have to cancel my plans. I got some vines planted on the arches today and fertilized everything so at least I got something done. I have a bloom on my old faithful noid but it had mealy bugs on it so it will probably be deformed. That is the one that had all those dried shriveled little branches so you might want to check for them on yours. Its little cottony looking bugs that look sort of like flat rolly pollies.

I had problems with my brug too when we started getting later into spring. It used to be on the west side and got sunshine from 2:00 until sunset, during early spring it was doing really well, but when we started to get hot (arrrgh! summer started waayyy to early this year!) the leaves started to sun burn and stuff. I moved and it's on the north side that gets direct overhead sun from 12-4:3ish and then gets bright diffused light through a tree afterwards. The trees surrounding the area (far enough to not block the light during the midday) also make the spot about 5 degrees or more cooler than the actual temperatures. It likes it much better there, and new leaves have begun to grow and these actually stay big and dark green. So I would say that Brugs may not like our full sun, heat, and humidity especially if they are in pots. I would just move the brug to a place that shields it from the super hot sun. Also, david_oklahoma, what nursery in Tulsa has brugs and daturas??!! I would so want to go and see that place and get me another one (:-D. would they also happen to have plumerias?

I'm going to try to post some photos...let's see if this works.... I think this leaf formation means my brug will bloom soon? and I think this is maybe a bud forming? and here's the new bed I built for 2 of my brugs: I've never built a garden wall before so I'm quite proud of myself. Hope you don't mind a detail of the wall itself (did I mention I am quite proud of myself?) and last but least are two beds I planted when we first moved in two years ago. I absolutely love the curbside bed - the indigo spires salvia is honey bee heaven and I've become really protective of my little bee population. Must be some misplaced maternal instinct. Here is what I do here in Sayville. My brugs are in 16 to 20 inch pots. In the spring I heel them into the ground (bury the pots about 1/2 way to prevent tipping/falling over). When frost threatens, usually late October, I cut them back, my 8 to 9 foot tall standards become 4 feet tall.........and into my basement they go. There is a bit of light from the basement windows, not much really. Basement is in the lower 60's temperature wise. I give them a half gallon of water once a month, this seems to be enough to keep them going, but, not to get them growing. There might be shoot or two here and there, and I usually get a bloom or two (boy, does the house smell good!). If the shoots get too wild, I just cut them off. Come April 1 I water every other day in the basement, this gets them awake and it is out the door and on the patio for the summer on May 1. Bloom for the 4th of July. Cuttings, I pot them up into 6 inch pots and grow them slowly on my window sill, I stick the cutting into the mix, water the heck out of it, then I keep them dry, minimal water (they will root and become semi-dormant, I really do not have room for them to grow much inside) and will pot them up in the spring. Potting mix is ProMixBX. Feed is Peters 20-20-20 supplemented with Epsom Salts and Milorganite. I feed the Peters weekly. My wood for cuttings, I am picky here, I use the semi hard wood, it is not completely green, not completely brown. Seems to root well, but not rot. Brugs root very easily. Just take it easy with them. I have rooted parts from just the tips to "instant standards" which is a long straight branch shoved into a pot. Just pinch the leaves off the branch which will allow it to root, takes about 3 weeks and you are off and growing. Think of them like little green people, I do. That 12 inch plant in a 6 inch pot will become a 5 foot tall blooming specimen in a 16 inch pot in about 3 months in my yard.
