new to brugs

I bought a brugmansia at a local nursery here in Austin and promptly went back the next day to buy several more. My roses have competition for my gardening time!

I just wanted to say 'hello' and briefly introduce myself. My parents were avid gardeners and showed roses for many years so I've grown up with a green thumb. I live in Austin by Lake Travis where the weather (if you can stand the heat) is perfect for gardening pretty much all year.

I'm beginning to rip out the awful landscaping installed by my home's previous owners. I'm so happy I stumbled across that brug. I now have four. I don't know what cultivars mine are. The plants were merely labeled "pink" "pink or pumpkin" "pumpkin" and "double white." When they finally bloom I'll try posting pictures.

Anywho - 'hello' and I'm totally in love with my brugs!

Hi and Welcome Shelley. Thanks for posting a little bio. Brugs are beautiful and quickly become an obsession as you can tell from reading all our posts. lol You'll be surprised when you realize how little care brugs require. Much less fussy then roses. You might find yourself giving up even more space for brugs, especially when the fall rolls around and everyone is cutting back their plants for the winter : ) Glad you joined us.

Boy time really got away with me. I'm been so busy with work and I just interviewed for a Masters Program at UT Southwest Medical here in Dallas, whew I'm exhausted! :) Here are the rest of my Brugs! :) I took these after work one day so they are a little darker than normal. Good idea, Eloise, about the markers. I had no idea that wasn't toxic to the plants. Thanks pkponder! Coleus was really easy to start from seed. I started a thread in the Container Garden forum, if you wanna check out the coleus progress! :) It'd be interesting to try different types of ferts but right now I'll stick with what I have on hand. I don't have access to any other fert than store bought ones... Yaslan, this is my first time growing from seed. I got a Wizard mix, which is a bunch of different types of coleus and I used pretty much the whole package and got lots of seedlings! Ashley

Hi BettyLu, Brugs contain alkaloids which can be toxic but usually just from ingestion and if the sap comes in contact with the conjunctiva of your eyes they will dilate. If you have especially sensitive skin then you should wear gloves but I (and most others) pinch my brugs and daturas with bare hands. Just remember not to touch your eyes if they have sap on them. I have cats, dogs and other animals and they've never chewed on my brugs. Keep your brug outside during the summer. Give it am sun and protect it from late afternoon sun. The description of where you have it sounds perfect but does the urn have drainage holes? They are very heavy feeders and need a well draining soil. Container brugs will need daily watering during the heat. I don't care for MG products and would add some perlite to it to help with drainage. Feed your brug every 2 weeks minumum. Weekly is even better. I prefer to allow my brugs to go dormant over the winter because they are such bug magnets and I have so many. With only 1 brug I don't see a problem keeping it growing over the winter. If you have a very well lit room it might do ok over the winter but you might want to add a grow light to increase the hours of daylight. It will likely decline some being inside but will rebound once it's back outside. Make sure you don't overwater your brug while it's inside or it can lead to rot. If you decide to allow it to go dormant over the winter you will restrict watering almost entirely giving it just enough to keep the roots hydrated. Maybe a cup or two of water every 4-6 weeks, if that. I have dormant brugs that get no water over the winter. I hope this helps and I'm sure others will chime in with suggestions. Good luck. Yes, sounds like insect damage. Check for green worms, they love tender new growth, but some will roll and dimple the leaves. Pick them off.

New to brugs - need help with cuttings

I'm in Galveston, I cut them off, pull off all the leaves and shove them into a pot full of Scots or miracle gro, water well, stick them by the back porch and they get watered with everything else or if they look wilted. 100% success rate. With our climate and the humidity it's much easier than everyone else. It's not supposed to get really cold yet, this next cold front will only get into 40's way north, if your in town it'll be warmer, 60's on the island, then it's going to warm up again. I have no luck rooting in water, they rot no matter what I do. And in soil I don't have to worry about changing water or the dog drinking the water. If yours don't make it let me know, I've got 20 or so rooted & growing by the back porch that need to be planted somewhere. I can meet you or if you come down to the island you can buzz by & pick up all you want. Along with anything else you'd like cuttings or divisions of. Tally HO!

and last but least are two beds I planted when we first moved in two years ago. I absolutely love the curbside bed - the indigo spires salvia is honey bee heaven and I've become really protective of my little bee population. Must be some misplaced maternal instinct.

The uneven leaf bases in the first pic are an indication that buds should soon develop. I can't tell anything from the second pic. Your gardens look great an the wall is wonderful. You want to come over and build a few for me? lol

Your beds are very pretty and I love you walls. Can't tell about the bud either but it could be. You just reminded me about the bees. I planned to spray a bunch of stuff tomorrow but just remembered all the bees on my jasmine. I have to make sure I don't hurt them. Grrr. It smells sooo good I would like it too if I was a bee. Good job posting the pics. Make sure you post one when it blooms.
