Sustainable vs Xeriscaping

OK, I've got a dumb question for the experts here. Back when I lived out west especially, the "hot" thing was xeriscaping - landscaping with plants that, whether native or not, have similar requirements for cultivation as local natives do. So they need minimum of added pesticide, fertilizer, etc. Of course, in Phoenix, xeriscaping meant desert plants, native to Arizona as well as other similar deserts worldwide. In southern Cal, it meant natives or plants from say the Mediterranean where climate and soil are similar. Now, I see the word "sustainable" EVERYWHERE. What's the difference bnetween sustainable horticulture/landscaping and xeriscaping?
