OK - I will admit I am lazy - I am going to copy and paste my answer from the Southern gardening Forum so here it is ....

For 38 years I was married to my biggest cheerleader and "grunt" person. My wonderful husband did all the heavy work, let me buy whatever my heart desired in the way of plants, suffered through endless seed trays all over the house in the early spring, patted me on the back for my successes and hugged me over my failures. He photographed all my flowers, built me arbors and planters, watered my plants, weeded the obvious - if he had a question he wouldn't pull it. At some point in time he decided he wanted a goldfish pond and VOILA overnight be came an expert on water gardening and bog plants. All this was done on a postage stamp back yard in Delaware.
In 1999 he took early retirement and we started our dream of 4 season gardening and a larger pond, with a stream and waterfall on 1 1/3 acres here in NC. We also had started an outdoor garden railway around the pond with a bridge going over the stream and had plans to do alot of minature/dwarf gardening. Life played a mean trick on us and after a 10 month battle with cancer I lost him on the first day of spring in 2003. I have since married a wonderful cancer survivor and together we share a love for gardening. We are fullfilling some of my first husbands dreams and building more of our own. Our motto is "he who plants a seed - believes in tomorrow" - we believe in tomorrow. Thats my story in a nutshell - yes spouses can become gardeners and gardeners do marry each other........

I think the answer to the question is that a few lucky people choose a spouse with whom they want to spend all their time. I don't think most people are fortunate enough to find a mate with totally similar interests.

Interesting question though---

My husband had not so much as mowed a yard before we married, but I do think that one of the reasons he married me is that I grow organic veggies. He has been learning (although I can't seem to stop him from asking "but why do we have to do this") but its doubtful that he'll ever head out to the garden solo. He and my son keep the grass mowed and the trees and shrubs pruned. They haul to compost the weeds, husks, and shells that I pile up. They will help with the heavy tilling or digging or setting of posts. I can't trust them with weeding, but they will help with harvesting if specific instructions are provided.

I'm very thankful that my new hubby is supportive of my gardening urges. He'll fix supper, bring me water.....and remember to go oooooooh and ahhhhh when we walk the yard and I talk about what's been accomplished and the future plans.

i married well :)

mine isn't a gardener, but helps with grunt work. and he's really appreciative of the garden(more so when it's not messy, which is rare). he's a lot more likely to discover some cool thing blooming b/c when he looks he sees what there is, not tasks that need done. he will only weed or prune exactly what i tell him b/c he's gotten too zealous too many times and gotten in trouble for pulling something he considered a weed that i was nurturing. lol. he's to the point now he helps plan out areas, and really loves all the produce & fruit. he's even gotten that he can name quite a few things- in scientific names to boot. so i'm sloooowly converting him. 'course, he wouldn't admit to it. :) he also plans and makes sculptures, trellises, garden art, etc, around the yard. best part is, he does the cooking, so i have more time to grow those veggies! tammy

Gardening is a shared hobby in our house. My husband enjoys propagating and growing from seed. Without much grumbling, he's built outdoor furniture, a screen, two arbors, a potting bench and some birdhouses. I enjoy weeding, pruning and designing.

We have disagreements about plant choices and hardscape. Digging chores result in cranky evenings. Still, it's great to share a passion for gardening.

I have a husband and 2 strong teenage boys - still not one scrap of help do I get. I even mow the grass and put in rock walls myself. My husband is so averse to the outside environment that I waited for an hour yesterday stuck at the tip-top of a 12-foot ladder till he came out to get me for a phone call and rescued me. I had been cleaning out the gutters and one of the ladder legs came loose. There was no descending without toppling. I did get a nice one-hour commune with the last of the drifting leaves and scattered birds sailing in the treetops. Of course the pouring rain was not a lot of fun. Still I'd rather do it all myself and be stuck on ladders in the rain rather than abdicate my throne as final-decision-maker-on-all-plant-matters.

My husband's coming around. He no longer asks why I buy so many plants, and in the Spring and Summer when he notices that I have dirty fingernails he is quick to complement the change in the garden. He can name quite a few plants, which he does with pride....and he truly does enjoy the veggies and herbs straight from the garden.(not to mention that next year we will have apples and blueberries). And, yes he mows the grass and does some grunt work. Like I said, he's coming around, and in the next few years I plan on him coming around enough to convert the gazebo into a greenhouse. Moi ha ha ha ha!!!!(evil laugh)

Yes. And then one of them wakes up stabbed with a pitchfork because he wanted stoopid turfgrass instead of creative perennial beds. Or he edged the driveway with RoundUp, creating an eyesore for weeks!!!! Don't let me near that pitchfork.

I'm wondering if we have a Law and Order plot line there...ripped from the headlines of GW!

Remember when you were little and shared a bedroom with a sibling? The turf war would get so bad that your dad would have to come in and "divide" the room with a line of masking tape that went all the way up the walls and across the ceiling just to keep the peace. Well I believe that if and when two gardeners get married that is what happens to the yard - eventually a line is drawn and two distinct halves are declared, "mine" and "yours".

Actually, I was kidding (more or less) when I wrote my comment earlier. We do disagree on some things, but he eventually comes around! We both firmly believe that homily, " If mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy."

Seriously, what fun to be married to someone who actually WANTS to visit the garden centers, who WANTS to stop and collect cuttings, seeds, leaves? Who WANTS to sit and browse through seed catalogs together. And I know exactly where to find all of the missing catalogs: in HIS bathroom!

Well I imagine they could. I Married a city girl who could never keep a plant alive in her apartment. With a little coaxing I helped her turn into the best assistant gardner I could ever hope for. I still get the jobs that involve bugs and such, but I can't complain about that. THe best part is that we both enjoy spending the time together gardening and the fresh veggies that we get. It gets a little tougher when it is over 90 degrees, but with a little planning it works.

Annie, Nebba-hachi! Was he an Egyptian pharoah? Maybe one of your Ex's. I understand the grounds for divorce were sandy soil...LOTS of it.
